Where's McGrain? I think Courtney beats the awfulness of Big Bill "I can't do anything right" Tate and Keene "I'm a swarmer who doesn't throw punches" Simmons
Courtney came from an era where swarmers were tougher and meaner. He also fought Corbett, who was basically a better version of Ali. Courtney TKO 9 Frazier in a war - Frazier was only a one-handed puncher, whereas Courtney also had a murderous right hand slap.
That guy was painfully bad. Corbett didn't look too bad, though. Not too good, mind you, but not too bad.
Real talk for a minute Cross Trainer. I know you are the Forum's expert on that bareknuckle era. Please tell me the bareknuckle fighters of the 1800s were not like Peter Courney. Please tell me they had more ring science to them.
Courtney was terrible by any era's standards. Admittedly, he looks worse to us because he's not only bad, but bad in a style that looks a lot different from the one we use. But he is still awful. I suspect he would have broken his hands in a bareknuckle fight. With that being said, Corbett looks good by the standards of the manuals.
Courtney was pretty much a bum by any standards. He never won a fight and was actually a dying man by the time of this exhibition match for the cameras.
I was initially going to say the worst boxer captured on film was this guy: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG5My-ar6V4&feature=related[/ame] ...but I think he'd beat the guy from BoxedEars' video.
Swarmer versus slickster. Flailing arm defense versus flailing arm offense. Mullet against lard. A study in contrasts.
