is it because he was massively overrated and needed to get some wins?

"Three decent fighters, a couple guys with nice records, and some bums."

Describes this one year of Toney's career.

Also describes Joe Calzaghe's entire career.

I must say, that's a jolly bad run by Toney. It seems he boxed against a succession of stable hands.

    Pongsaklek Wonjongkam

Won the WBC Flyweight title from 11-0-1 Malcolm Tunacao. After which he fought

    Alvin Felicilda 8-7-2

    Hayato Asai 16-2-2

    Alex Baba 18-1

    Luis Alberto Lazarte 19-4-1

    Daisuke Naito 19-0-2

    Jesus Martinez 15-2

    Hidenobu Honda 25-1

    Randy Mangubat 31-17-11

    Jamie Arcerda 10-15

    Hussein Hussein 23-0

    Trash Nakanuma 23-4

    Ronnie Canete 19-14-3

    Luis Angel Martinez 14-6-2

    Randy Mangubat 32-20-12

    Sherwin Manatad 11-12-4

    Noriyuki Komatsu 19-1-5

    Unknown

    Mark Sales 14-27-3

    Daisuke Naito 27-1-2

    Isidro Balabat 7-4

    Gilberto Keb Baas 26-12-1

    Daigo Nakahiro 13-1

    Everardo Morales 27-10-2

    Monelisi Myekeni 21-2

    Lito Sisnorio 10-4-1

    Tomonobu Shimizu 10-1

Daisuke Naito 30-2-2 (Pong lost this fight, so I'll start back from when he won the WBC Interim title back, starting with the title win)

    Julio Cesar Miranda 29-3-1

    Takahisa Masuda 20-8-3

    Rodel Tejares 14-13-3

    Koki Kameda 22-0

    Rey Migreno 12-12-2

    Suriyan Sor Rungvisai 14-3-1

    Heri Purnomo 1-3

    Ego Yohan 0-2

    Muhammad Nurfawaid 1-3

    Takuya Kogawa 17-1

    Pakasit Twins Gym 0-1

    Edgar Sosa 43-6

    Hirofumi Mukai 5-1

Then lost his title to 33-10-5 journeyman Sonny Boy Jaro by 6th round KO.

KO'd 2 debuting fighters in ? Tubis in 3 rounds and Ji-Hun Lee in 4 rounds.

Which apparently earned him a WBC International Flyweight title fight against 15-9-3 Hyobu Nakagama. Then fought 12-11-4 Charlie Cabilla for a encore.

I left out a ton of fights 40 or 50 fights into his career against debuting fighters, which is where a lot of his KO's came from.

So to answer your question, this is a much worse string of opponents.

you may not be bashing toney, but you also dont know what the hell you are talking about either...

lets give your thread some perspective, before and after
before Toney won the super middle weight title, he won the middleweight title and defended it 6 times in 11 months :admin:happy
and if your counting 8 fights in 15 months , 7 of them being world title fights.

    1995-02-18 Montell Griffin

after he won the super middleweight title, he had 10 more fights over the next 16 months.... 3 being for the belt, the others to stay busy because he just liked to beat people up

so if you are gonna knock a guy by pointing out **** opponents, it might be a good idea to note that he was fighting some of them 3 weeks apart from each other and averaging a fight per month...thats old school and wont ever be done again.
if you want to see a worse set of opponents , look at GGG last 6 title fight opponents and now his laughable 7th coming up

Yeah pal, i'd noticed slothrop on one or two other threads, his posts are agenda driven and full of hate, not really the type of person i wish to debate boxing with. He thinks 'old school' means a champion fighting the 'bum of the month club' and deserving credit for it.

Andre Ward would have been laughed out of town for facing that calibre of opponent whilst champion.

Thats a very good call pal, if you get the chance later will you box rec 10 consecutive opponents up whilst he was champion because that would be interesting to see.

not at all pal, though it will be interesting to see where cleverly is at 10 fights into being champion. I think he's the type of fighter that is going to surprise many ignorant posters on esb though and leave egg all over everyones face just like I did with DrMo in this thread.

    :patsch:rofl

Toney is old school and he just fights to stay active. Only the Thornton, Littles and Prince fights were for the title. Thornton was a perennial contender, Williams was champ at 175 for a long time til dropping a decision to Maske and Littles was a hot prospect that had beaten future champ Frankie Liles.

Team elite has jumped the shark.
