is Toney the smoothest, most elegant fighter of the last 20 years?

Pernell Whitaker was more skilled than James Toney was for sure, and that's coming from a big big Toney fan, but I think I know what the TS is getting at here, and I agree. Aesthetically, Toney is the smoothest fighter of this age. The way he stood in range while utilizing the shoulder roll, the laser-accurate counter right, the fast fluid shots inside and combinations - he was smooth as silk indeed. The way he just slices through Iran Barkley like a hot knife through butter is just poetry.

I voted yes, but I think Toney is the smoothest only from MW upwards. There have been smoother fighters at lower weights (like Pernell Whitaker...)

I'm biased. Toney is one of my favorite fighters and in his prime he was the best in terms of natural boxing ability and skills. I gave it to him. He's the best combination of boxing offense and defense in my opinion. Just wish he was more focused.

Roy's the most dominant fighter I've ever seen, period.

Closest he came to a loss, before the age of 34 (taking out his DQ) was a 3 round UD - from middleweight to heavyweight.

I agree fully. A lot of ATG lists for eras are based on who's the current guy, who's got the hype, who the fans love.

Once Pacquiao, Mayweather, Jones, are all long retired, Jones will be the guy at the top

That's James Toney after Roach and Ariza pumped about 30kg of steroids into him

Toney is one of the slickest fighters of the last 20 years no doubt but I wouldn't call him "elegant". He's not a proper boxer with beautiful movement he's mostly stationary on his feet. Even Nunn was more elegant and graceful than Toney.

Agreed. He is the smoothest fighter for sure. You are talking about a boxer who can get in to the ring, get in range (like you mentioned) and barely exert any energy and pick his opponents apart. Nothing but small movements and twists. Small adjustments to shut down his opponents.

    Smoothest for sure...
