A great ref is a guy who is a master at maintaining control in a fight while at the same time never taking attention away from the combatants and making himself apart of the spectacle. His job is to keep order, enforce the rules and provide the fans with a good, clean fair fight. But foremost, his main priority is the safety of the fighters. Boxing a beautiful yet brutal sport that injure and even kill a man, especially when a fighter is rendered dazed, unconscious and helpless by his opponent. At that point its up to the ref to save the defenseless fighter from unnecessary punishment.

With that said, is Tony Perez the greatest ref ever??? Here are some examples of his work at protecting fighters.

    1) Gerry Cooney vs. Ken Norton-1981

    2) Ray Mercer vs. Tommy Morrison-1991. In order to celebrate the 10yr anniversary of his 1981 performance Perez decides to appease the fans by putting on a similar display.:D

Ouch! That Morrison KO is painful to watch even today...

I always thought Octavio Meyran was a fine referee. Tony Perez, not so much.

Wow! Tony Perez must be some kind of sadist who gets his jollies seeing defenseless fighters get teed off on. That was disgusting. He shouldn't have been allowed to re again after the Norton debacle.
