I respect Dan, but acknowledging the WBA "regular" defenses as legitimate feels not only like a stretch, but a way of promoting the WBA's b.s. Just as Danny Jacobs is the WBA "regular" champ and not seen in any way as a real titleholder, Golovkin also held the same status until Geale decided not to defend against him. Only then did Golovkin hold a real title and even that sounds a bit generous with the route the WBA has taken.

I agree about him being on a roll and still looking in peak form, but he is an aggressor who can be hit and fought at a high level in the amateurs, so he can plateau at any moment. That is what makes his trajectory so hard to predict. As good as he is, however, I think two years of middleweight defenses at his pace would have to throw him into an all-time great discussion.

Manny had just got KO'd and didn't comeback until Nov of that year, I'm not one of the people who act like titles are meaningless. But still acting like the mandatory thing is a big deal when it isn't half the time the mandatory isn't even a major fight.

I just try to look at thing equally people sh!t on Guerrero for saying he's a 5/6 division champ yet praise GGGs 14 title defenses when 9/10 of them he was an intriem titlist just like Guerrero was for 3/4 of those belts.

Sounds good, unfortunately we are not the arbiter of such things. The actual commissions are. And so, Golovkin has 14 WBA title defenses to his name which combine both the Regular WBA belt as well as the Super WBA belt. This is how things are looked upon, officially. Regardless of what you and I think.

The WBA belts (Regular, Super) are seemingly held in continuity (you keep the "WBA belt", that is) when one goes from being a Regular Champion to a Super Champion. We can see this in the case of Felix Sturm here:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...#Middleweight_.28Super_belt:_Carlos_Monzon.29

    and here:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middleweight#Longest_reigning_middleweight_champions

The first link shows that Sturm made 7 defenses of his "Regular" WBA belt from 2007-2010. And then Sturm was made "Super" WBA Champion. Sturm then had an additional 5 defenses of this "Super" belt as well from 2010-2012. Which makes for a total of 12 successful defenses for Sturm as the WBA champion (Regular & Super).

The second link shows that Sturm is regarded as having had 12 defenses of the WBA belt. And just to make sure that Wikipedia's view of official boxing history is correct we can double-check it, for example, in this article from Sky Sports:

Before I actually looked at the poll results a small part of me that's has no faith in today's boxing atmosphere/community said I would see a disturbing amount of folks claiming GGG is an atg already. I tried to remain positive and hoped I would see a large percentage claiming the 3rd option.....that wasn't the case, GGG is awesome and I wish him the best but comparing him to hagler, bhop, mozon, greb, fitz, tiger, srr, Lamotta, fullmer etc etc makes me cringe.........I mean these HOF caliber guys even fought each other.....put aside the superficial stats and and aggregate the careers of these men and GGG falls way short. Only time will tell he has great potential but you do him no justice by inflating what he has done this far.

Obviously all the 160 pound so called elite seem to think he's an ATG theyre reluctant to get in ring with him avoid him like the plague. I don't think their is anyone at 160 that could give him too much trouble.
I see Fox says he ought to fight Ward who is campaigning at 175 these days that's 15 pounds heavier than him. Then other said ,when GGG offered to fight Floyd at 154, Floyd isn't a junior middleweight not fair. Heck he holds a title at 154 doesn't he ROFL. Same thing with Cotto. Poor Quitto isn't a real middleweight he just holds the lineal middleweight title.
Takes two to make a fight but no one seems to have the cojones.
Kudos to Lemieux for stepping up hope its a good fight

If he were to retire today he would not be remembered as an ATG middleweight, not even top 10, the division has a long history with many great fighters.

His reign as champion is questioned because he wasn't even the WBA champion for most of his reign as Sturm was the genuine WBA champion holding the Super WBA title. He also hasn't had the career defining fight at middleweight like when BHop beat Tito or when Hagler beat Hearns.

What Golovkin goes onto do in the next few years should cement his legacy. Hopefully his fight with Lemieux does good PPV numbers so he can convince Cotto or Canelo to face him next, he deserves a shot more than anyone.

H2H he'll give any MW in history a tough night out
Resume wise ... no, not ATG.

    If he adds:

Cotto, Canelo, Lemieux, Chavez jr ... maybe also Quillin, Lara or somebody comparable that would already be a big step up. It could be debated.

If he pounds Ward in addition to those I would say yes, ATG status.

Also, if some of those that he beat have exceptional careers, that could add to a case. Khomitsky is turning out to be a good win for example. Murray could still do things.

I think the seeds are there, but this is historically arguably the deepest division in the sport, so he has a long way to go to cement any claim in my opinion.
But I'd like to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
