Or does he belong in the Hatton bracket? Always failing miserably when he stepped up to elite level as he did with Holyfield and Lewis.
Dont be silly. Plus you cant really call the Tyson that fought Lewis elite can you. 1 fight in about 12 months plus being 1 stone overweight. And it still took Lewis 8 rounds to get rid of him. Plus only 1 year later he was taken out in better fashion by Danny "the human punchbag" Williams.
Ok, so what ATG fighters did Tyson beat? Back in the day Calzaghe (ill use him as a comparable for this point) before fighting Kessler, Lacy, Jones and Hopkins was told he cant be an ATG if he didnt beat an ATG fighter.....Tyson never beat an ATG. Not one.
He bacame champion during the weakest era in HW history and he didn't even have a long reign before getting schooled by Buster Douglas. He then turned ****** and went to prison and upon release was fed bums to build his self esteem, Bruce Seldon laid down for him then handed him his paper belt, all hailed King Tyson again. Then Holyfield destroyed the illusion once again and the cycle continued. Feed him bums, step up, get destroyed, and repeat. Not an ATG no matter how much he bobbed and weaved.
Tyson never beat an elite fighter, except Holmes, who was well past his prime, and who is also more of an ATG than Tyson (imagine how easily a younger Holmes would have picked apart an older Tyson). Your Hatton analogy makes perfect sense.
Some may see Zoo an an ATG but it was his last ever competitive fight which tells you he was done, like Holmes was done. I actually believe thiere careers are quite similar, step up, lose, fight decent fighters, step up, lose, repeat
The destruction of Michael Spinks is one of the most awesome performances in history. Spinks was a great fighter and took Holmes 0 for **** sake. And then he beat him again!
I know a fair bit to be fair. He never beat an ATG. He lost to Buster Douglas who already had 4 defeats on his record. He stepped up v Holyfield....lost He stepped up v Lewis......lost His big wins were a way past prime holmes Frank Bruno x 2 (once with bruno fighting with a torn retna) Spinks Tubbs Ruddock Thats probably it Does fighting Savarese and Francis in your so called 'usual HW prime years' make you an ATG?
