Is Tyson deserving of being called a trully great fighter?

The trouble was, he peaked too early. He was a ****ing monster at the age of 19.

 

At his best, he was one of the greatest fighters in heavyweight history. All there is to it.

 

Pre **** Tyson was spectacular

 

never has a teenage lad blitzed prime HWs the way young tyson did, I think that is what made him stand out.

Even if he did nothing more after that and retired at 24, thats historical as a feat. Only Ali and Louis (and perhaps Patterson) come close with such precocious teenage ability. I should mention Louis too.

 

From 1986 to 1989 he was one of the best heavyweights in history,youngest heavyweight champ ever,probably the most explosive and exciting fighter ever and second most famous fighter ever after Ali,yep he's a great fighter,he burned out quick but for a short time he was great..

 

Its really hard to say.

You cant take away the fact that he was the youngest champ ever and youngest to unify the titles.

But, his resume isnt exactly spectacular.

I dont buy the whole "he was shot by the time he was in his mid 20s" myth.

He looked like a beats at 19/20 because he fighting bums up until his title fights.

Granted he looked great there, but Trevor Berbick, Bonecrusher Smith, and even Michael Spink as a heavyweight are not going to go down in history as anything of note as heavyweight champs.

His beatings against Holyfield are a blot on his ATG status.
Although Holyfield is himself a top class heavyweight.

So in conclusion, he was great in ways, but limited. A great heavyweight champ, but I wouldnt have him as high as many here.

Of his contemporaries,Id have him behind Lewis and Holyfield, in the all time rankings

By the time he fought Evander Holyfield he already stopped training seriously. That and the firing of Kevin Rooney make a world of difference.

Buster Douglas was the only person to beat prime tyson and even then Tyson's mentality started sucking

 

Stop talking about 'Tyson'.

Just watch his damned fights. Then make your own mind up.

I've seen several Tyson haters just sit there with their jaws having dropped after seeing a Tyson highlight reel.

Then before you know it, they want to see some of his full fights.

He was A BEAST in his prime.

He was still a good, good fighter after his prime.

But Prime Tyson, and the 'Don King' Tyson - Were two entirely different animals.

 

I love watching those highlight reels as much as anyone, but most of those spectacular KOs are against complete nobodies.

The best fighters Tyson beat are Spinks,Berbick, Ruddock,Bruno, or a past it Holmes.

Highlight reels always look good. But when Tyson went up against a guy like Holyfield who could take his punches, he didnt have a whole lot to fall back on.

Pre-prison Tyson was 41-1, about 30 of those wins, were against complete nobodies or at best decent journey men

 

Until that hussy tripped over with her mouth falling onto Tyson **** and being stuck there for about an hour he was a beast.

 

The only thing that wasn'tn great was that he couldn't sustain a lengthy career.Tyson 85-90 was one of the most exciting things that ever happened to boxing.

He was an absolute phenomenon.Anyone who wasn't old enough to watch him at his peak has never witnessed anyone having the impact on boxing that Mike had.
