Most of the rounds were close. Seriously, where do you think those judges pulled 4 rounds out of?

You are the window licker of this forum without a doubt...

I've seen this fight more than you've been caught licking windows, heaps of times. The fight was a close call, well the JUDGES did see it and two had it 6-4.... :nut:nut

And yet he wasn't outboxed. He still won clearly by any reasonable scoring and bearing in mind it's a 19 year old going ten rounds for the first time. I struggle to find the four rounds Tillis won.

To the original question: Been through this thread many times before. The fight was way over-hyped. Tyson was just way too much for Spinks. Tyson even alluded later that this win wasn't that great. He KNEW Spinks couldn't hurt him and went out there and put him away. Good, easy win for Tyson. Not underrated win. Actually overrated, but showed what Tyson could do with a non-threat in front of him. The media built this fight way up and Tyson just did his job.

Spinks walked in like a scared cat that fell off the fence and woke up the junk yard dog. Tyson feasted on those who were afraid of him.

One of Tyson's easiest fights. Spinks new he did not belong at heavyweight and stayed retired at young age.

Over rated win, but memorable for how quickly Spinks went out.

He wasn't outboxed but I never claimed he was anyway. I said Tillis did considerably well and that a more skilled boxer in his position could have done the deed, even if he didn't have great punching power.

As for the rounds, it's all subjective. But clearly, 2 judges saw the fight as a close one, and so did several members on here apparently.

You sorta said it yourself here. Tyson being way too much for Spinks is what's often ignored. I mean, Spinks did what nobody else in the division could do at the time; defeat Holmes. Yet he was, according to you, a non-threat to Tyson. How is this not ridiculously impressive?

Styles. Spinks could be crafty. Those tactics weren't going to work against Tyson.

It's an underrated achievement. Spinks had impressive accomplishments at heavy, a great skill set, and was supposed to be Tyson's toughest test.

Kevin Rooney was a degenerate gambler. In the dressing room before the Spinks fight, Rooney told Tyson he'd bet his own paycheck AND Tyson's on a first-round knockout. Rooney was so addicted to gambling, Tyson believed him. Tyson punched a hole in the wall in the dressing room he was so angry. Then Tyson went out and knocked out Spinks in the first.

In the ring immediately after the fight, Tyson explained what had happened. He explained that he thought he wouldn't get paid if he didn't score a first-round knockout. Exposed on worldwide television, Rooney said somewhat embarrassed: "It's still a good payday." And then he laughed.

But Rooney never worked Tyson's corner again.

People blamed Don King for that. Rooney blamed Robin Givens and King. The truth is, Tyson was 21 years old, he was totally controlled business-wise by Bill Cayton and by Rooney in the gym, and Tyson had enough.

It worked out that time, but Rooney's gambling problem, in that Spinks fight, had begun to impact Tyson's performance.

If Rooney hadn't told Tyson he'd bet his whole purse, and Tyson didn't actually believe him (because Rooney was blowing all his own money at the time), I've often wondered if Spinks would've gotten into the flow of the fight and performed better.

I agree, though, it is an underrated win. Same as Hearns' win over Cuevas. After Hearns destroyed Cuevas, people tended to forget what a frightening champ Cuevas had been and how feared he was prior to that bout.

It means little ,Bert sugar said Tyson would lose easily! Its good win for Tyson but realistically spinks was never better than Holmes at any year or age.the two fights were a joke.

    Underrated?
    I would say overrrated.

Tyson fought well and stuff and it was a good victory. No argument here.

But it has been blown out of proportion by the Tyson loyalists. Spinks was way gone before the fight started, and he was gone for good afterwards.
