Tyson punched the hole in the wall because Butch Lewis, Spinks' promoter, made an issue of a "lump" in Tyson's gloves as a psychological tactic (which backfired in a big way) to get under Tyson's skin -- his entrance was held until commissioner Larry Hazzard came from ringside to inspect and OK it.

(Eddie Futch, Spinks' trainer, said it was insignifacant -- the glove thing -- but it obviously angered Tyson in a big way.)

The part about Rooney telling him about betting the purse is also true, and Tyson probably did believe it (or at least wonder) and attacked with extra ferocity because of it, but at least according to Tyson the reason he punched the wall was because of Lewis.

As for the poster who said Futch picked Spinks, well, he was Spinks' trainer so I doubt he'd publicly pick the other guy.

the argument is the other way actually - tyson is the only defeat for spinks, and the only time he was put down. He was 32, only just past his prime at the very worst.

spinks did just fine, outstanding in fact, until he came up against the force that was tyson. going from never beaten or floored to both in seconds, the one thing that caused that was tyson, not anyone else he had ever faced.

It's not really an underrated win.

At the time Tyson was a HUGE favourite, it was considered by many to be a bit of a mismatch going in, not just after the event.

It was a massively built up fight, based on historical significance (Spinks had the "linear/RING" title) and the fact that Tyson had built himself up to "Super Fight" status while the Fab 4 were fading, so Spinks was a suitable undefeated name opponent to fully exploit the demand to see Tyson in a meaningful fight ... also Spinks was a bit of a "puzzle" and an "enigma", the kind of fighter than might spring a strange upset, and also there was the "grudge" aspect of the fight, as Spinks had been accused of avoiding Tyson and then Tyson's managers had been accused of keeping Spinks waiting in retaliation.

It was not really a case of Spinks being considered a strong challenger or a threat to Tyson. He benefitted from being the last one standing of the class of '85/'86 champions, he was someone Tyson needed to fight just to clear things up.

If its an overrated win , then whats Wlads win over Haye?

Haye being one of Wlads best wins and a performance that got him a lot of praise.

Haye was a lesser opponent that Spinks. In every department.

I don't recall Tyson getting rocked down to his boots by Spinks in the 12th round. I don't even remember that fight going into the second round.

Mike would have ran through Haye just like he did Spinks. Wlad had to stay away from Haye at all costs despite his huge size , power and reach he had over him. With all that he still knew he couldn't tangle with the 210 pound , weak chinned Haye so waited out the distance to have the judges take care of him.

He could't even drop Haye never mind blitz him out in a spectacular first round stoppage.

Haye is guilty of exactly what you accuse Spinks of- throwing in the towel cos he knows he's knows he's not cut out for the division.

Its a pity Haye ducked Fury cos he was going to show how easily a real HW in his prime would dispatch him.

Just like Ortiz would have easily stopped Jennings if Jennings had the ballz to take that fight.

If Mikes win over Spinks is overrated than Wlads whole career his overrated.

Haye is much stronger and faster than Spinks!Fury would not have beat Haye at the time they were to fight. When Fury was on a british boxing show with for 4 former Hws at the table who included Lewis/Bruno/Mason and someone else ,no one picked Fury at the end of the show after the entire breakdown of the fight. And fury was right there at the table not Haye.

Yet Haye pulled out with a supposed bum shoulder.
Seems he was not as confident about his chances as you are.

    Wrong

Bruno picked Fury , not Haye. Lewis and Fury don't like each other so his opinion is moot.

And that was before the defensive minded and more refined , mature Fury of the Chisora and Hammer fights.

Chambers and Cunningham saw that Fury before anybody else in camp and thats why they picked Fury to win.

Haye eventually realized what he would be facing and thats why he quit.

No case for Haye winning when the duck is as clear and evident as that.

Haye has poor footwork and average foot speed. Fast single shots. Not so fast in combination.

Spinks- Exceptional footwork and above average footspeed. Fast combination.

    Skills- Un-comparable.

True but there was also Joshua there who sparred with fury and he liked Haye...that's 4 guys to 1...

Haye has bad footwork and combos you obviously did not watch any clips on youtube of those.?:patsch

Spinks had little footwork,he changed angles at awkward positions,Haye would would jump in and out with those long arms and speed he also had k.o power..Holmes rocked Spinks several times with a jab,Haye would put the smaller weaker Spinks out by round 8 in a confusing stlye of switch hitting angles

You're obsessed with Wlad, why bring the Haye bout into the discussion? Wlad was pretty poor but Haye was even worse, he was the guy who was boasting he was going to decapicate Wlad with his devastating power, instead he decided to play a game of catch me if you can....

Depends on who you talk to.. Tyson detractors will move heaven and earth to dump all over Spinks as being an overmatched has been from a lower weight class who stood no chance, while Tyson supporters will build that win up to being the second resurrection of Jesus Christ. I am in neither camp. I take a middle approach which is to view Tyson's victory over Spinks as a clear and concise passing of the torch against a very respectable ( but not great heavyweight opponent. )

I rate Tyson's win over Berbick as a better win.
