Spinks was a top 3 P4P Fighter with wins against Cooney and ATG Holmes at Heavy. But people just say he was a blown up light-heavy and dismiss the win as a good not great one. I would say its a great win.
It's a great win. The guy went 30 rounds with Larry Holmes. Tyson iced him in less time than it takes to make micro chips!
Chop it up any way you like, the guy was 35 AND ZERO. For ****s sakes, you don't carry the 'Spinks' family name and fight in the sticks. Yet it ended in a KO1. There is just NO arguing with that result.
The win itself isn't underrated, certainly not at that time. The way he did it unleashed a world wide Tyson hype, but Spinks already lost the fight before it started because he looked scared sh*tless and Tyson then just bumrushed him like he did against most scared opponents.
The win is underated because it was such a blowout. Had it been Holyfield going 12 rounds everyone would be going nuts over it.
Yep, and Spinks hadnt fought for a while. Watched it with my old man (I was still at school). Even before the fight he took one look at spinks and said "he's shitting bricks. Now way he gets out of the second round. He'll be lucky to get that far. Wasn't even a devastating KO IMO. Spinks looked terrified, got hit, went down, end of fight."
He's trying to say that because Spinks was scared Tyson got him out easy. As though Spinks being scared is a detriment to Tyson.
Spinks was a great fighter and I give Tyson credit for that win About the only discrediting is the fact that Spinks did not wanna be there and lost before the bell even rang
It's no more underrated than Spinks win over Holmes has become, or how Michael Spinks has become in general. Sure, Tyson blew out a very good fighter virtually at the top of his game...but I don't see how anyone can honestly say it's underrated. Type in Michael Spinks in Youtube and tell me how many videos of the knockout are on the first page...and then tell me how many of Michael Spinks career victories are on there.
It depends on who is rating it. And if you bring in Rocky Marciano's competition into this to compare...no way is it overrated.
Spinks avoided Tyson for a while so that was Spinks fault; not Tyson. If Spinks was scared, and we are talking about a HOF, ATG, LH, who was HW Champion by beating Larry Holmes...that's on Spinks. All Fighters are scared...even Tyson. Floyd Patterson said he actually liked being scared because it helped him win. The problem with fear is that you don't want to let it get the best of you because you will freeze. Spinks knew he was in way over his head. His chances of beating Tyson was slim. Why? Because Tyson at that point was that damn good specifically for Heavyweight the size/weight of Spinks.
Tyson, win over Spinks was a good one. Spinks, tried the Spinks jinx but missed and good countered and hit the floor hard and was counted out, end of story.
