At the time, no.. It was something that people would buzz about for months after... Today? Probably.. Most have diminished the quality of Spink's standing as a top heavyweight, by pointing to his inactivity, being a former light heavyweight, etc... My position is that the quality of the win is somewhere in between.. While this was by no means a win over a prime all time great opponent, it was still a very destructive performance against a lineal champ who was undefeated and never floored... My biggest problem with Spinks however, was the he did not step in the ring looking like he wanted to fight, but that isn't Tyson's problem..
Alot of people were scared of Louis, Liston, Foreman and Marciano BUT you don't see them getting **** for it, ONLY Tyson gets hated on for inspiring fear, Which is pathetic IMO.
Yes, to the first sentence. No to the second. Tyson can't help how spinks performs. He did what he had to do. He showed up and took advantage of a clearly terrified opponent. Exactly what he should do. All I'm saying is that the win isn't as good as I hear it made out to be, as Spinks was practically retired, and put up no fight at all. Nothing tyson could do about that at all. And yeah, his previous showings had a lot to do with that.
yeah, these are normally the people who simply follow the crowd. while tyson had his weaknesses, mainly lack of discipline, in his prime, he gives any heavyweight hell. he may have been the most talented hw ever.
Tyson is an overrated fighter and this fight contributed for that. So I'd say that the win over Spinks has not been underrated.
