Boxing is huge worldwide, and in the US the latino and black community keep the sport big. Mexico is all about boxing. So the only place in North America that is more skewed towards UFC is Canada. BOXING IS FINE AND IT WILL NEVER DIE! Boxing the manliest sport on the planet.
The UFC will suffer in the long term because the fighters simply don't get paid enough. Brock Lesnar sold a million PPV's every time he fought and yet didn't make anything like what a top boxer who attracted those PPV numbers would earn. If he earned a million PPV's in boxing, he'd get over $20m per fight, more than he'd make in three or four MMA careers. There simply isn't the money there. Either the UFC is ripping fighters off or they are losing money somewhere. Either way, when an MMA fighter becomes a world champion, he's going to look at what boxing world champions earn and he'll doubt whether he made the right decision. Young guys taking up either MMA or boxing have to consider this too.
Hell no! Nobody in the UFC makes a million dollars a fight in purse money. And very few do after all the bonuses and sponsorship dollars are dived out. The biggest fight purse for their top stars I've ever seen paid out is $750,000, now for the big names a big fight could maybe pay them a couple Mil., as I said after bonuses and sponsors pay. Even when they paid Boxer James Toney to fight one of their big stars at the time he was paid $500,000.
1 UFC fighter has had a purse of over 1 million dollars for once fight last year. More than 15 boxers had a purse of over 1 million dollars last year. nuff said.
just from what I see in Houston I would have to admit UFC is overall more popular than boxing. Since more UFC events are shown on basic cable (fox and spike tv instead of showtime and hbo) it has become more popular with the common man . UFC even has a reality show on cable which draws in alot of new viewers since alot of people today are drawn to reality tv. With that said, when boxing brings out its cash cows (Mayweather, Pacquiao) the level of hype buries UFC in the dirt. Just for the Mayweather Cotto fight I know of about 15 fight parties just from my inner circle. Even with the biggest UFC event I'd be lucky to be able to round up 10 friends to come watch it with me. So I believe basically because you can watch UFC on your basic cable it does seem to be more popular than boxing just with the every day person who really has no real interest in any sport. But for the hardcore or even casual fans, boxing rules the lands here in the USA
Keep in mind that number is from at least 12 or 13 ppv's total added over a whole year. Which averages out to about 565,834 ppv's apiece, but the numbers are not even like that over the whole course of the year. Big name fights used to score ( stopped watching this stuff a few years ago) anywhere from 800,000 to 1,500,000 (< biggest number they ever done I believe) but cards with less popular fighters even some of the champions defending titles can only pull 150,000 to 200,000 buys.
The UFC does it through accumulation (countless PPV events per year). Boxing does it via one-punch KOs (2 really huge draws in Mayweather and Pac).
Yes, the UFC is more popular than boxing everywhere BUT the UFC is not more popular than boxers i.e. Floyd, Pac, DLH etc
It's pretty popular but in terms of mega fights, boxing still got the ufc beat. I mean you could put two of their biggest stars and let them fight and boxing would sell more PPV. Just imagine if pac-mayweather happens. I'm sure it will sell more than 1 million possibly over 2 million buys I can't see this happening even if ufc put Jones-Silva or GSP-Silva fights but UFC is very popular in here. I have many co-workers who actually prefer ufc now more than boxing just because of all the BS happening in it. You don't hear two fighters not wanting to fight just cuz of some bs drug testing.
Short of Pac-Mayweather though, what's another mega fight that would catch the attention of casual boxing fans? The sport right now is ridiculous in that there is really only one fight that's going to garner a massive amount of attention, even among fans who don't follow the sport very closely, and it looks like it may never happen. Fights like Cotto-Mayweather get some attention, but how many casual fans that would be all over Pac-Mayweather even know about Cotto and Mayweather happening tonight? This is one thing that has diminished my interest in boxing in recent years. More often than not, big fights that should happen don't, or they take too long to happen. At least with the UFC you know you will see the top fighters constantly fighting each other. Obviously that doesn't mean UFC is superior to boxing, but it makes being a fan a lot simpler.
