Pound for pound, Valuev is pretty amazing. Very, very few, if at all, 7 foot 300 pound fighters could do what Valuev is doing. In addition, his hand speed is pretty amazing for his size.
His endurance is pretty good too, for a lumbering mammoth of a man. Never seems to completely gas out.
Erm, no. It works both ways you know. You can say he's only got where he has because of his size, but at the the same time its the reason he's so ****ing slow and ponderous which is disadvantageous. Even if he was smaller, he'd still have a jab, good work-rate, okay chin. There are far worse fighters at the top level, Ponce De Leon for example
I don't like Valuev, he isn't exciting to watch, isn't a very good fighter (though improving and with a good jab, especially for such a freak of nature), and I also think he lost more fights than his record indicates (Larry Donald, Ruiz I). He would never have become a belt-holder but for these robberies. And Ruiz II and Bergeron were very close fights, could have gone either way. BUT I will say something positive about Valuev here now: he is an active fighter and fights about three times a year. Maybe not always top competition, but that's Sauerland and Kings decisions. That's more than Wlad or Peter, or Chagaev for that matter...
Well, maybe his post just points out the stupidity of P4P? Pavlik is the home town lad, yet I get a kick out of boxrec.com having him listed #1 P4P. Just waiting for the "Do you think Mayweather can potshot his way to victory over Valuev........" thread. Certainly you can have some VERY athletic big men. Look at the NBA. But physics win. They won't be the same type of fighter.
I think I've made some pretty relevant observations about Valuev's weight and how incredibly ineffective he is at using it to his advantage. Why does he get a pass for being "too big", when guys vitali and lennox use their size and height to great advantage? My idea of "p4p" consists of taking a fighters skill set and either shrinking them down or moving them up, and how effective that skill set would be in another weight class. If Valuev can't totally crush a guy 3/4 of his size, he would be pretty terrible if he was fighting guys of equivalent mass.
Yes, he's a big uggo who is not the most exciting fighter, but I think the matchups are interesting. He is a bit of a novelty, but hasn't boxing always been a bit of a circus?
Post-Sergei Liahovich he was billed as a new and improved monster Now after a fight against Ruiz, he's awful. Could it be Ruiz is just a spoiler in the sense of Hopkins and Cory Spinks?
Maybe it was just because Lyakhovich, who actually was a very talented fighter once, was terribly ring-rusty and out of shape...
