I haven't been amazed by anything I've seen in Khan or Angulo in their last fights. Angulo put in a good performance against Lara, but it's hard to tell what impact Hunter has had. He's been working with Ward forever, but Ward honestly seems like the kind of guy who could teach himself to box. His ring IQ is exceptional and though that can be fostered by a trainer, it can't be created. What do you think, ESB? Is Virgil Hunter the real deal for training?
I think he can take a young dude with talent and teach him MAYBE, but I don't think he's the kind of guy that can improve an established fighter. How else can Angulo fight? The guy is a come forward power puncher like Margarito... And as for Khan? The guy's just cares too much about entertaining the fans than he does about protecting himself (probably his only admirable personality trait) Give him a guy like Terrance Crawford or something like that and we'll see what he can teach'm
Yes. Since Virgil 'Hill' has trained Khan, all Khan's defensive problem and chin problems remain. All Virgil 'Hill' has done is make Khan attack with less vigor.
I think you have pretty much answerd your own question. In my opinion he would help to improve most boxers, and he seems to be a very calm and clever man, but with any trainer you can only work with the boxes you have and can't turn any old genetics into p4p material. To be honest your question is a bit flawed, but I would say he has helped to improve Angulo, and we will see slight improvements in khan, but he can't give khan attributes that his genetics can never reach, where as ward has the genetics to be a top p4p fighter.
I think Khan, as flawed as he is, has the natural talent to be among the best. It wasn't an accident he won a silver medal at 17 years old. Think about how close a 17 year old came to winning olympic gold. His chin is not good but his mentality in the ring is WORSE than his chin. If he stuck and moved and protected his chin better (skills I think he's capable of learning) I think he could rack up some impressive wins. He's beat some pretty good opponents lest we forget (Maidana, Judah, Paulie). Maybe I'm just a dreamer but I still believe in Khan. If he tightens up his punches and works on D, he can make it. Virgil SHOULD be the perfect trainer to teach him this, given that Ward is nothing if not tight punches and great defense.
i dont think you can just take a fighter and expect them to change there style completely .. thats just my opinion. i think it takes years and years and years of work to build up chemistry to get things working. unless he grabs them from very young
He seems more of a 'thinking coach'. Look at the way Ward, Khan and Berto all talk. It is different; Hunter has had the biggest psychological impact on Ward. If Khan stick around him long enough, some of that may rub off on him too. I think once he changes your psychological approach, then it all begins to 'click' into place otherwise it's like trying to teach someone algebra when they don't know how to count to 10 yet.
Well he shouldn't be judged by the success of Khan or Angulo, especially not after such a short time working on & with both of them. Both are immensely flawed and very advanced in their careers to be fixing those flaws. That said, he is a "fixer-upper" specialist, meaning we should be able to see gradual improvements from them in a couple fights' time. If not, that could reflect poorly on his reputation.
I don't think there's anything a trainer can do when his fighter lacks even the most basic levels of boxing IQ. He can improve them physically and advise them at ringside, but do I think he can teach Khan how to utilise his talents and cover his weaknesses? No. I don't think any trainer can. I reckon if he gets them young, he can make them great though.
Yeah, at this point it's patching up the leaks, minor repairs. Angulo and Khan will never be consistently intelligent fighters.
