not in the traditional sense of taken to much of a beating but from a mental sense he was made a complete fool of ,completely outclassed he taught of himself as an elite fighter and a world champion, someone who taught he knew how to box, but then he was made to look like a guy who only took up boxing a week ago. lomachenko mentally ruined him and made him quit, he knew if he continued lomachenko was turning on the gas and was going to beat him to a pulp so do you think that walters could now be mentally ruined and no longer the same fighter?
Is Walters shot? Absolutely not. Nor should he be. Although he lost in an incredibly 1 sided fight, he still proved he is a good fighter. He was broken down and the knew there was nothing in his power he could do to amend that. Watching that fight, from the end of round 3 Walters was done. His character in the corner was very different, his body language hinted at the final result and if you watch the 7th round, you will see Walters looking to his corner 3 times from memory. He wanted out. Mentally, it will be interesting to see how he bounces back...if he does bounce back. Can you imagine going into a title fight believe you are the best in the business. Less than 30 minutes later, another fighter has you questioning your ability. Its not like boxing is just a sport to these guys. Its their career. It must be bloody hard to stay mentally strong following a defeat at the top level. So, to answer the question, is Walters shot? No. Will he ever fight at the top level again? Sure, why not? Physically he is still the same fighter. Mentally may be another story, but only Walters can answer those questions.
He likely doesn't have the same confidence, and that could affect how he performs in his next fight. But he's not mentally 'shot'. He just needs a good win to find himself again. Because he didn't take a beating and he's not that young he should get back in the ring as soon as he can, and be more active.
Geez man these modern fans are way too harsh. Lose a fight against a super talented two TIME gold medalist 395-1 amateur record and you are shot? Nga plz
He might become gun shy. Walters went through hell(bit of an exaggeration, i know) to KO Donaire, yet quit as soon as Loma caught him with a few good punches. Reminds me of Victor Ortiz. When he was hurt, he would always fight back but when the opponent would not concede, Ortiz himself would.
I don't think there's any way back to elite level after being mentally dissected in such a complete manner. Worse than having his body stretched out on the canvas, Loma surgically extracted Walters' fighting soul and laid it bare for all to see. Yeah, he can have a couple of easy comeback fights, and score some confidence-boosting KOs but when he has to go into the trenches again opponents will know he's got quit in him. Worse than that, he will know this too. I agree, he's not going to be physically shot by that fight. But the mental fortitude that makes men climb into the ring and take hard punches for a living? That was shot by a sniper called Vasyl. Dead.
People forget that he was genuinely hurt and wobbly vs Donaire. Donaire landed his money shots. With that said, Lomachenko stole Walters' soul on a more demoralising note.
We won't know until he's back in the ring. It won't be the first time a loss like that wrecked a guy, but it also wouldn't be the first time a guy recovered from a whooping to move on to big things successfully. Not by a longshot. One bad fight doesn't have to wreck him forever unless Walters lets it happen.
When he bloats up to 160 pounds between fights and just quit because he got outboxed so hard i'd say there is a possibility he is now shot. He could continue to perform at this weight or the weight above but will he? I don't think so. Probably try and get a few paydays in whilst he is still young.
No, just needs the right types of comeback opposition. MOF.....if he could somehow convince Arum to set him up with Salido, he'd be right back to the Axeman of yesteryear. He really needs to be more consistent in his S&C, and in his training habits. He looked like he was trying to be the faster fighter last night, which he never was gonna be, and didn't put on any weight after the weigh in. I mean 136???? Really. He was coming in heavier than that early in his FW days. He should look to put on a few lbs, loosening his frame up, and allowing him better flow in his offense. If a fighter isnt right in front of him, or fighting backing up, he doesnt seem to get off in exchanges. I seriously think, for better or for worse, he should move N to 135, let his body add the weight naturally to fit his frame, and not be worrying about having the built of a miniature Lee Haney. Seriously though, at SFW, he has several VERY winnable fights, and we all know LW is as soft a division in the sport. If not the softest atm. Even SMW has more legitimate A levels and veteran former titlists still making noise. He could rebound vs a top 10, but not a top 5 P4Per, at 130, but allow his body to carry 140/141 into the ring, and forget about trying to match footwork or handspeed, but focus more on being the stronger man, the heavier hitter, with the more responsible defense.
