The Smith fight being contracted at a Light Heavy Catch-weight (172), perhaps? And, DeGale hadn't won his world title by the time Ward/Smith was signed.

It's more reasonable to assume that Ward had already decided to move up to LHW, without giving DeGale a thought, than him having based his decision on wanting to avoid DeGale.

Ward cant make 168 anymore. I bet he had to work really hard to make 172. I watched the weigh in for the Smith fight and Ward didn't look like he had much left to take off him.

That sounds implausible ...though I do think Chunky would give SOG his best challenge @ super middle, from a technical standpoint.

SOB is a cheat. He will fight in his home town only, with his personal referee, judges and boxing commission....................

Andre Ward is definately avoiding James Degale.
I recall Virgil Hunter giving his thoughts on James Degale and referring to him as mentally weak prior to the Dyah Davis fight and thinking that Degale may fall apart in that fight. He didn't. Then the following year in front of 80,000 screaming fans at Wembley ;) Degale stopped the previously unbeaten trained by Hunter Brandon Gonzalez who was dropped hard and stopped in 5 rounds.

Hunter told Ward he shouldn't take the risk with Degale.

Ducks DeGale to fight Kovalev, Stevenson, Pascal, Gonzales... Sounds legit ;)

Super Middle is the weakest division out there....

Has he signed or agreed to fight Kovalev or Stevenson?
I dont think Gonzales is a top challenge and Pascal was beaten by a fighter near 50 when he was in his prime.

I do agree that SMW is not strong and I dont think has been for near a decade. It seems a bit of a recycled division

Ward will not come near Kovalev. Those negotiations are not serious from the Ward side.

That's a lot for a guy with less than 30 fights.

Whether Ward has signed a contract to fight Kovalev or Stevenson now or not, doesn't either way support the idea that Ward moved up to LHW, in order to avoid DeGale.

Doesnt mean he also went up to face Kovalev either.

Its only a feeling, but im not convinced Ward will fight Kovalev unless Kovalev gets exposed or if Kovalev were to lose to a limited fighter in some way, the think Ward would go after that fighter if it were to happen and not Kovalev. If that makes sense, but that is only a feeling I have

Many fighters early in their careers fight in many different locations. Consider Hatton and Cleverly fought in America early in their careers.
Its often what happens when they are champs that decided if they are fighters who travel and defend on the road or if they dont.
Of course alot of this does come down to where draws the most money and crowd and bigger fights
