While I think a hopkins/kovalev match-up is all wrong for the old man,
I think the style of ward may be hell for the russian. If, however, sergey
ends up being able to push ward pack and throw hard short shots inside
then Andre's fugged. We haven't seen that from sergey yet, but what we
do know is if you give sergey 3 ft or better you're probably getting KO'd.
Ward is good at taking away the big shot, but from guys that load up or
throw the power shot off the jab, which is most fighters. Sergey just comes
in with both hands in combo fashion, and appears to throw powerful arm
punches without any telegraphing. Some guys get alot of pop from just the
elbow to the fist, generating snap in the forearms. That's going to be almost
impossible to stop. Also consider the fact that sergey is at least as strong
and big as ANY fighter Ward has faced in the AM or pro. There are still question
marks about this russian, but from what i've seen he stops Ward mid rounds.
Wards chin is still suspect and no one has been able to land hard on it. This
russian has the ability to do it, and if he does Ward won't cope well.

Believe it or not, Kovalev does actually fight a bit like a heavier handed Froch. His chin, fitness and resiliency haven't really been tested so we don't know if he has those qualities in common with Froch.

That said, the fact remains that they both are good athletes, have underrated jabs, throw a LOT of punches and are excellent finishers.

Kovalev would knock Ward out!!! Ward does not have enough power to keep Kovalev off him. Kovalev can go 12 rounds, he is prepared to do such if needed. I can't believe that some on this board are claiming that Ward would easily beat Kovalev. The same ones who claimed that Cleverly would knock Kovalev out. Kovalev is also much stronger than Ward, is used to fighting all over the world, while Ward will only fight in his home town with his personal referee and judges. Kovalev just stopped Cleverly in Cleverly's home town, something Ward would never do.

you don't need power to make a fighter question himself if his aggression isn't effective

  7. We know how good Ward is, he's been in there against the best at 168. Kovalev looks good but let's get real, he beat Nathan Cleverly who could well be just a bit above Euro level.

So I'm holding out on jumping on that gravy train, but if they made the fight it would definitely be an interesting one. A lot of questions answered in that fight for both sides.

Tell Ward to fight Kovalev and we will find out. Ward will only fight in his home town with his personal referee and judges. His best punch is his headbutt. Ward has never been in the ring with a fighter as good as Kovalev. Don't have to worry though, Ward will never get into a ring with Kovalev...............

Hopkins wasn't tied up when Kovalev was made his mandatory. The Murat fight was off at that point because Murat couldn't get a visa, and Hopkins publicly stated that he would take the fight with Kovalev. His exact quote was "that's my mandatory and that's my obligation, and I would say yes to that fight". Kovalev opted instead to fight Cleverly. :deal

Exactly five of Ward's 26 pro fights have taken place in Oakland... For all you ****wits who keep repeating the same nonsense about him "never fighting outside of his hometown".

Yes, man, I think Ward would work him over bad and win a clear UD. Kovalev is no joke, but if Ward is anywhere near on his game I see a win for him.

The truth is that Ward is the only guy that didn't travel during the S6, period !

He's scared to not be robbed overseas but what about the other fighters that had to travel during the S6 tourney ?! They weren't scared about being robbed abroad ?! :think Yet they travelled and still travel ( Kessler ) ! :bbb

Ward is a great boxer but he has to travel and fight ! When he'll do that he'll earn all the respect ! Otherwise he'll stay in Oakland being irrelevant and "calling the shots" ......

    Ward vs Froch in UK
    Ward vs Kessler in Denmark
Ward vs Pascal / Stevenson / Bute in Canada

Ward vs Kovalev in Las Vegas / NY / AC

    :yep:deal

A: I think Ward would beat Kovalev by UD but it would be a tough fight for bth. The fight should be @ 175 lbs !

He traveled just about as far as Froch did for the super six final. Not that it makes a shred of difference... They could have fought on the moon and Ward would have still whooped that ass. A fight in the UK today would be no different either. Ward's just a better fighter than Froch.
