is Ward really fighting TBA on Cotto's undercard?

That is an interesting point of view. A legit one which could explain why Ward acted that way with Bute, which he might of thought he would get thru Froch, like Bute thought himself (with his coach, promoter and the vast majority of the boxing world) considering Froch is slow and has no great style.

Froch has had the better career due to not having the injury issues Kessler has had so you can't really compare resumes. But there is little to separate them in terms of actual ability and both know that which is why they have so much mutual respect for each other.

The first fight Kessler won but I felt Froch under performed in that fight. I was rooting for Kessler and predicted he would KO Froch in the 6th round but Froch won me over in that fight. He was better than I thought and he was very competitive while looking less than 100%. He seemed subdued, had he pushed himself a little harder in that fight during crucial stages he would have won.

The 2nd fight, Kessler wasn't the same but even then he gave Froch all he could handle. Great fight and proved it didn't matter how many times these 2 fought it would always be close.

Past-best Kessler beat prime undefeated Froch, that's all you need to know.

And although resumes don't win fights, Kessler was #1 SMW post Calzaghe until Super 6 and he was the favorite to win it.

Froch was perennial #2 and never achieved #1 status, plus he was an underdog to Ward.

Beating the best fighter in the world is clearly better than beating the 2nd or 3re best.

I wouldn't disagree with that point of view. At the time Ward beating Kessler was better because Kessler was seen as number 1 at super middle unlike when Ward beat Froch. But with hindsight Froch went onto achieve more than Kessler in terms of resume and proved in terms of ability he was as good as Kessler if not better.

Pretty bad of Ward to be taking on TBA in his upcoming fight. He should instead be trying to imitate Kovalev's upcoming fight and take on a real opponent.

I like Ward, but he needs to decide if he really wants to do this anymore. A man of his stature taking a TBA fight is ridiculous.

In any event, good luck to the man. When he is on, he is one of the best.
