    Simple question,

A lot of guys I talk to about boxing training seem to think all boxers should use weight training as an integral part of their training plans to improve strength and power, whilst it doesn't result in any loss of hand speed.

I'm of the opinion that weight training is good for the casual boxer to improve strength and power, but Plyometrics are the best method as the explosive movements work fast-twitch fibres the most, and they should be used by top fighters where the fine details of their regimes matter.

What do you all think? Is weight training good all round?

    Cheers

Do both plyos and weights, just don't neglect the boxing part. I think people end up overdoing the weight lifting so their boxing technique diminish over time.

And if you're doing weight lifting don't follow a bodybuilder's workout. You want to maximize strength gains and not mass.

Can be, in moderation. I prefer another form of resistance training myself.

If done correctly then it can help but just like with any form of training it needs to be adapted to your specific needs.

I have been doing contrast training recently which involves heavy weights followed immediately by a complementary plyometric exercise to improve explosive power.

Wow, on the same day? I've never tried that... always did them on separate days. You must have excellent recovery time!

Thanks, I'll have to give that a try.

I think it depends on the person. If it improves your performance in the ring do it. If it doesn't, then dont. :yep

the people that throw their hands while holding the light weights seem to do well...

its good for when their hands and arms start getting heavy in the ring...

Weight Train is good for Boxers, use sport specific exercises to boxing, explosive movements with a good size weight. Good for strength gains
