I think you are overstating the case. In the past 12 months: 1) He fought undefeated Kelvin Price, who had a win over Tor Hamer (and has since beaten Danny Williams, who is at least a decent journeyman). If he's poor, should those who have lost to Hamer hang up their gloves? 2) Matthew Greer -- poor fighter, below journeyman level, but it came up on a week's notice a month after the Price fight. GBP has a relationship with a promoter in Mexico who had someone drop out and wanted Wilder, quick way to pick up a win and some cash. Should he have turned it down? 3) Audley Harrison -- I don't recall people calling out David Price when he fought Audley, or David Haye. The guy was coming off winning Prizefighter, obviously not the sturdiest guy in the world but why is it only Wilder gets criticized for fighting him? Was he great when those guys beat him? 4) Sergei Liakhovich -- never stopped in less than nine rounds previously, has a few good wins on his record, only lost to good fighters. When Bryant Jennings fought him, he was considered credible, apparenlty -- again, no one criticized the matchup. He was competitive in that fight, as he had been in every fight in his career, so exactly what round in that fight did he become shot? The problem is that Wilder has knocked out these guys quickly, so that apparently makes them bums. If Kelvin Price had lost a 10-round decision to Wilder and Liakhovich had been competitive and went into the 8th round, people would rate his opposition differently. Just happens that he knocks guys out quickly so that makes them horrible in some peoples' eyes. GBP had an opening on the Hopkins undercard, wanted Wilder on it to enhance the card -- but with mid-card money on a month's notice, Firtha was the guy they could make a deal with. He went 10 with Povetkin, was in a war with Fury, went 12 with Banks -- why wasn't anyone screaming about that if Firtha is so pathetic? If he's a C or D class fighter, those three guys should turn in their cards and find another line of work as he gave them credible fights. Wilder, a rising prospect/contender, is fighting a heavyweight journeyman who has shown well against good opposition. A solid, not spectacular opponent. Why is that a crime?
Well, he surely isn't pushing himself. He is simply hoping to gain a title shot by having an impressive ko record.
Let's keep in mind that Golden Boy(and Haymon) are micro-managing his career so they probably advised to him to avoid these guys.
Wilder is not a coward, he'll fight anybody. But his management doesn't seem to have much faith in him. Firtha is actually a step up from fat old middleweights like Marlon Hayes, pot-bellied clubfighters like Greer, and shot fighters like Lyakhovich and old Audrey. After five years as a pro and nearly 30 fights, Wilder should be fighting better journeymen like Kevin Johnson, Malik Scott or Carlos Takam.
months notice? where was Hayman 7 weeks ago when his last fight was over in a round? so they wait 7 weeks to start looking for an opponent for a date that is now only 4 weeks away? yeah thats a load of CRAP! :rofl
Windmill would KO Fury, but not how you think. He'd be DEATHLY afraid of Tyson's "power", much like he was of Audley's. and just start Windmilling like nobody's business. Fury would be confused and get tagged and drop. His MO is the 2nd, so I say Windmill KO2 Fury. However, WM signs to fight Tony Thompson...well then, we have a different outcome. Tiger beats him in 3
A journeyman who Windmiller ducked. Past thread on Wilder ducking page. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=382952
Don't give too much credit to Tony Thompson. I think he is done. He is looking only for money nowadays. We may see Tony vs Wilder next year.
