Is Winky currently one of the best 15 fighters in the world? If so, why?

I don't have Winky on my top 10...although he's def on the outside of it.

He hasn't lost convincingly in a long time...but the problems with that is he hasn't won any big fight convincingly lately. To me he's living off a one sided beating of Tito Trinidad and two wins over Shane Mosley. His last win was a 12 rd spar off with Ike Quartey.

Winky vs Vernon Forrest would clear things up IMHO.

I dunno....it must say something for Winky if he's been able to fight such top competition and never suffer a real legit loss in the last 4-5 years.

I'm not saying he's top 10...but in that second tier, He should be there.

Winky beat Quartey convincingly, he actually had him hurt also in the fight. Quartey beat Forrest....**** that decision. there is nothing to clear up here. I would like to see the fight though, Winky by UD :deal

Anyone not under the payroll over Vernon Forrest agrees with you. THAT is a robbery.

That said Quartey and Wright were/are buddies and neither one really went out there with any sort of convinction to hurt the other. Quartey wen't down but to be frank, it was a cute little sparring contest and a nice lil bump for Winky.

I thought he beat Taylor too....but what I thought and what the scorecards say seem to be very different lately.

You have simply repeated what you said before. You have not engaged with my criticism of your original post in any way. :conf

Well what are you looking for Dec?

    Accomplishments, style, current attributes?

I MIGHT be able to help out if you could tell me what your criteria is (and before you ask, Yes I kind of skipped the first page of the thread) :bart

I'm not of the belief he's top 10 like some people...but he's def 2nd tier.

I have not trouble with him being in the Top 20 somewhere...but anyone who will confidently put him Top 15, and possibly around the Top 10 mark, needs to justify it.

I am looking at his level of performance at 160 lately.

Well anyone who fights at 160 right now will have a small level of overratedness to them, mainly because anyone whose anyone at 160 clearly has plans to move upwards and onwards to 168.

That said Winky is in my top 15 because of his recent record. He hasn't been blown out or hasn't lost convingly enough to get bumped out COMPLETELY...but at the same time he hasn't won anything of significance to keep him in the top 10. It's almost like being caught between a rock and a hard place, you can't knock him out completely because it's unjustifiable...and yet you can't keep him in the top 10 because it's just as bad.

He really is enjoying a perch from three wins---Two against Mosley and one against Tito. From there he has a easy win against Quartey, a draw (that should've been a win IMHO) with Jermaine Taylor who at the time was the "consensus" #1 guy at 160 and of course a close (IMO) and ugly (the worlds opinion) loss to Bernard Hopkins. In other words he's faced top competition and while he hasn't won, there isn't anything there that says he should be completely eridacted from the top 15.

Inactivity doesn't help my argument much either as Winky seems content to demand a payday way above his means as his skills suffer more and more. If he doesn't fight in 08 against a top 10 guy, I'll move him out of my top 15 completely.

Oh...and one last reason? Appearances. Guys like Christian Mijares deserve some sort of top 10 consideration...but I just haven't seen enough of him to feel confident by slamming him into my top 10. It's just how it is. I've seen about 15-20 Winky Wright fights, I KNOW what he does. I haven't seen enough of Mijares and Haye to put them above Wright. It would look hypocritical and rather foolish to follow the crowd and put a guy I know little to nothing about in my top 10.

Hopefully that clears up....something. I can't even remember what we were discussing.

Thank you. But don't you think he looks slower than before, even though we cannot say for certain because he fought at 170...

    Don't you think he's declined/faded a bit?

Why do I think he should be in the top 15?

Because I cant think of 15 fighters better than him.

I did a top 10 the other day (which I normally dont do) and I didnt have Winky in it, I said he would be somewhere in 10-15.

He can come back in the top 10 easily with another big win.

The Hopkins fight, he didnt get brutally KOed or dominated, he put up a good fight for the condition and weight he was in. I was major pissed off at him for that fight because he didnt come in the shape he needed to in order to win. The loss is his fault, no doubt, but I still think he is a good fighter and top 10-15 material. I can see him beating sturm and its possible he could beat Pavlic if he gets that fight. If he beats Pavlic, he would be probably 4-5 on the P4P again.
