There is a really good interview with Winky Wright on Fight Hype.Com. Winky is talking as if he still wants to make the big fights and take on the top guys. Go read the article, and tell me if you think Winky is still viable.
Nobody wanted to fight him before, now there is a great reason not to. His style is tough to fight against, and you get nothing from beating him now that Williams did a number on him. Good luck Winky, but you might as well hang em up. His only shot is getting a fight where HBO demands one of their house fighters to take on a tough challenge, similar to what they did with Williams. Noone is calling out poor Winky.
I personally consider Winky the most underrated of his generation He beat Vargas and Taylor and got robbed in both. Took Mosley and Tito to school. Gave Hopkins a good fight at LH - somewhere he shud neva hav been. I think his style is difficult for most to handle thats why he has always has a chance. I just fear the layoff took it all outta him, last time we saw him he barely won a round in a 1 sided beatdown. I think Winky in good shape can beat most middleweights, just donno if he can get back 2 sumthn like the old Winky
Sounds pretty much like he always did. I'd want numbers to back up his claim he didn't price himself out. I don't remember previous numbers exactly, but he is still thinking he is worth more than he is I think. He can't dictate the market, it is the other way around. Who is clamoring for Pavlik to fight the LOSER of the Williams/Wright fight? Not like it was close. Geez Winky.....
Absolutely under rated! Here's a guy who fought his first world title fight in 1996 (McKart) and he can still beat most of the guys in his division.
i think winky is unfortunately irrelevant. he will ALWAYS be tough to beat (as lefthook said) even when he ages as his ability isn't based in athleticism or reflexes but style and smarts. the downside is, after the paul williams debacle, he's even less of a scalp. who wants to take on an aging fighter, who just got dominanted but is still more than capable of making you look bad? if you win, you don't get credit as williams already did it. if you lose, you lost to a nearly 40 year old fighter.
I agree with this, and I think he will be appreciated more once hes gone. He was a really good champion, really excellent jab, and shows you what you can get accomplished with an excellent jab. He didnt have a huge aresenal of punches, nor did he have a lot of power, but technically he had an excellent defense and jab, which he accomplished a lot with. That being said, boxing for the networks is about excitment these days, and he hasnt been involved in a lot of exciting fights, its always been "lets see if this guy can figure out Winky", Its always been about the opponent matching up against him. Now that hes been shut out, its going to be hard for him to get those fights.
