I ask this not because the mans skills have eroded, but because since the Hopkins loss he has been inactive and seems to have turned down all the fights that have been offered to him as well as not pursuing any at all. I read the article on the front page about how Wrights managers turned down a fight with Abraham in Germany, which I think was a dumb move on Winkys part, as it would have given him a shot at the belt and a potential match with Pavlik. Does anyone know anything about him fighting again? I find it odd that he and his camp have made no noise at all about fighting again or who they would like to face
He wanted to join the DLH-inspired retirement circuit. Alas, nobody cares to see him fight. He isn't the draw he thinks he is.
Maybe Wright knows what he's doing and all this wasted time won't effect his performance, or amount of time he'll have left. Maybe not. Doesn't look good though.
Well . . . he maybe done as serious contender because of inactivity but it doesn't necessarily translate into him being done as a good fighter. We need to see . . . if he can make a comeback and allign himself into contention again.
Winky? A guy who puts on dull fights with regularity? A guy who's best days were in light middleweight giving Bronco McKart and Shane Mosley thorough beatdowns? Forget him. Since he'll only come out for PPV, there's no way in hell Wright will ever get another fight. Buh-bye Winky.
He has a date reserved on HBO for sometime in January but no opponent set yet... It was supposed to be Abraham in the states i think but i dont know whats going on now
I thought Abraham was trying to do something in the US? Why would Team Abraham risk breaking that fight by only making an offer for Germany? Is that the way it went? Sounds fishy to me. Anybody remotely familiar with the situation would know what Wright will say to an offer to fight in Germany. That's like a non-offer.
He was arguably the most skilled fighter of the decade at 154, the thing that I find puzzling is why he never tried to establish a legacy or pursue fights, his career has been very start stop so to speak. He beat Shane Mosley twice beat him for the 2nd time in November of 2004, was undisputed at 154, then he doesnt fight again until 7 months later, when he beat Trinidad. Then he has great momentum, but doesnt take a fight until the end of the year in December, when he stuggled against Soliman. Another 6 months, he fight Taylor, entertaining fight, but turns down a rematch. Another 6 months, fights Quartey, beats him, then another 7 months until the Hopkins loss. He has only been fighting twice a year since 04', once in 07', and the fights were spaced enough apart that he always seemed to have faded from the scene a bit before the next fight. Also, his management and he always seemed to entertain fights but then turn them down due to the purse or the location. I know he was avoided alot, but when he was at 154 with the belts and after beating Trinidad he just seemed to squander a lot of opportunity by refusing to make deals. Now he is 37, and his time I think has pretty much passed. Him turning down an Abraham fight just validates it.
Well, $1.5 mill against Pav would have been a nice payday IF he thought he could beat him. Once he had the belts then he would have been in the drivers seat again. Someone argued $1.5 mill + part of the PPV was an INSULT to Winky.atsch
