It's been over a year since WW last fought and, to my knowledge, nothing is scheduled for the remainder of this year. Assuming he does get back into the ring again, how is he not going to be massively rusty? Does anyone know if this is unofficial semi-retirement or if this is just an unjustified holdout for a big purse in a fight for which the public has little interest?
He's supposed to fight on HBO in January. There were plans for him to fight Arthur Abraham in Germany but he turned it down.
It's Winky Wright we're talking about. Most likely he felt he wasn't getting enough money. He has a delusional view of his box office value.
He should fight a title eliminator as a warm-up to become Pavlik's mandatory. I've been saying for a long time that Wright should've went for a Pavlik fight and vice versa. Winky is similarly skilled like Hopkins but not as physically imposing. I'd still favor Wink though. Pavlik needs to learn how to box which believe it or not is more than coming straight in and throwing a double jab straight right. He should start by getting a real trainer.
he needs to definitely get back in the mix. he could get a few good scalps on his record. sturm would be an easy belt i would think and a good fight to shake some rust off before going after pavlik or abraham. plus a belt would get him more of the money he deserves.
The problem is that Winky thinks he is a prizefighter that deserves big paydays based on his big wins. The problem is he isn't a prizefighter because nobody gives a damn unless you're knocking people out. He is just an excellent boxer. In order to get big fights he must make himself unavoidable by having the belts.
