Tyson had an aura about him. As did Lewis to an extent. Tyson was talked about in mythical terms (and still is, like Ali).

Haye v Klitschko would be an undercard fight on the Tyson-Lewis bill.

 

Agree, its nowhere near as big.

 

I don't think many felt Tyson had much of a chance if it went past 3 rounds. At least I didn't.

Regarding popularlity: Tyson v Lewis put about 16,000 people in the seats (granted, ticket prices where obnoxiously high).

Haye v Klitschko will put about 50,000 people in the seats.

 

Not even close. I see very little mainstreet Hype for this fight.

Two clear losses to Holyfield? This fights hype was bigger than it's potential to deliver.

Not as big but in ways more exciting for boxing fans.

Everyone knew Tyson was past it, but on July 2 we have 2 prime fighters.

 

Zombie Tyson was toxic waste in 2002, but it was a bigger Superfight.

"Mainstream Hype" was much bigger for Lewis-Tyson, & i reckon the purses were bigger too.

 

I was like 7 when that fight was taking place and it was definitely my first memory of a boxing match, it must have been pretty huge for me to know what was going on I remember I watched it in a pub and alot of people were still picking Tyson . Haye vs klit hasn't got the sort of hype I thought it would over here alot of casuals know its happening but don't seem too bothered imo

 

I don't think it is really, that fight had been anticipated much longer than this one even. It came too late though in reality, this one is happening at just the right time. Only the fight itself will dictate how it is remembered in history. Both should be basically one sided beat downs. One for Lennox, one for Wlad.

 

Restate the question:

In America, where there has been no heavyweight threat in years, is this fight as popular as Tyson v Lewis.

That's really all you're asking. I'm from the States and I say, "who cares what if American excitement is as high for this as it was for Lewis/Tyson?".

I reckon & I may be the the only 1! lewis vs tyson 10 years prior would have been the exact same ending, In fact tyson is lucky lewis went to the oylmpics instead of facing top guys!

 

Tyson and Lennox were actual Hall of Fame caliber fighters way before their fight. It was nothing more than a notch on another's belt. Haye V Klitscho would have been a good under is about right.
