The point is, noone can. And as younger and better wrestlers start to dominate the sport even more, either a/ the rules will have to modified and become even more anti-wrestling, or b/ viewers will have to accept that that is how the sport will look.
Modify the rules so they are MORE restrictive? GTFO of town. I suppose we should have outlawed submissions in the early UFC days because people didn't like them as much as striking. We can't forget why the sport was founded guys. MMA is designed to simulate a real fight. Any rule changes should be met with extreme skepticism.
I would not be in favor of any sort of rule change at this point bar bringing back in kicks and knees on the ground.
Bull****. Wrestlers still have to compete against each other and when their wrestling skills are canceled out they must rely on other aspects of their game to win. To quote the great Cael Sanderson, "unless you continually work, evolve, and innovate; you'll learn a quick and painful lesson from someone who has."
Then wrestlers will be dominating the sport even more, if you need to be a top wrestler to even have a chance. See?
Not true at all. It doesn't matter what background you come from; you still need to be constantly improving to compete in MMA. For example, GSP never wrestled before competing in MMA but that didn't stop him from taking NCAA champion Josh Koscheck down repeatedly.
Wrestling should be banned from MMA! lol jokes IMO pride rules favoured strikers with the four cornered ring and knees to the head on the ground if you miss a shoot. Made things more exciting. It's the cage and the crap north american rules that make it too easy to just maul a guy against the fence, drag him down, and elbow the **** out of him. That's not showing who the better fighter is to me. Better cage fighter maybe. Those days are gone though.
I don't think so. The guys keeping people on their back are top wrestlers like GSP, Koscheck, Lesnar etc However there are guys with quality takedown defences like GSP, BJ and Chuck. The rules are already slightly anti grappling. If you stall or change position, you get stood up. In fairness the 2 most recent popular examples of guys being held on their back are Hardy and Daley and they've got really poor grappling backgrounds. Wrestling will force people to learn more sweeps, use their hips more etc It could help the sport. People facing Koscheck, GSP and Lesnar will be working their back game massively. I think the sport still has some way to evolve. MMA seem to be getting better and better at boxing, the same will be true in BJJ, Wrestling etc
He may top me on number of MMA matched attended but add in Muay Thai and boxing where I have judged and trained fighters for shows and he is nowhere near. But your missing the point - someone who has never participated in the sport can lecture on the fine points but I would listen to those in the know rather than a journalist.
The term never meant just asian arts - it was just assumed by the ignorant to refer to only asian arts. As an example many European arts were referred to as martial arts long before the cinema took hold of the term.
