I'd say it's probably a little closer to Cruz being, at the very least, good at what he does, rather than due to any severe deficiencies on Tank's part. I so think Cruz has the style and attributes to give pretty much everyone at the weight at least some difficulty. Heavy handed, come forward guys with tight defense and a ridiculous chin aren't fun to face at the best of times. Maybe some of the other top contenders might win a few more rounds off of him, but I don't think anyone gets off easy against Cruz for a while, yet, anyway. I do agree that Davis isn't a top ten p4p guy right now, but he's got enough tools to give anyone else at lightweight a severe test at this point in time. Hopefully, continues to step up his level of competition so we can get an idea of how good he might be in the future.
Oh he respected it. It's a reason he wasn't just rushing in throughout the whole fight. He kept his high guard the whole fight and chin tucked. He respected it for sure.
Not comparable. Yes Cruz landed some low ones but Twink's use of illegal tactics were excessive and far more egregious from start to finish and the ref only had to warn Cruz a few times throughout the fight and he didn't continue to do it all night like Twink, whereas, conversely, the ref had to keep telling Twink to cut stuff out and should've done so even more and even though he was stiff-arming the hell out of kangaroo arm Cruz nonstop to keep him at bay and prevent him from getting in close, and whenever Cruz did manage to get into his range, the range which heavily favoured him he immediately grabbed ahold of him like a limpet to prevent Cruz from working and unloading with his shots and stringing them together in combinations. And he was pushing Cruz down to the canvas and through the ropes all night too, flagrantly headlocking the hell out of him, spinning him and punching him in the kidneys, forcefully shoving him, and even flagrantly trying to judo trip Cruz in full view of the ref but he never deducted even a solitary point. We don't have a problem with a bit of dirty stuff but when it's all manner of illegal activity done to excess all night and the ref has to warn and admonish the guilty party all night to stop doing it but doesn't deduct a point or points from them for it it's different. Twink's fouling was excessive and egregious. Hence why the ref had to keep pulling him up about it, Cruz's wasn't. Twink was allowed to get away with illegal tactics all night to prevent Cruz from fighting his fight, Cruz wasn't allowed to fight his fight.
Cruz didn't land "a few low ones". He went low in just about every round. Some of them were borderline, and some of them were somewhat lower than borderline. He was also coming in with the head, and definitely fired shots after the bell a couple of times. Cruz also tried to wrestle and spun/threw Davis to the ground, too. Davis could have been deducted a point for sure, maybe even two... but Cruz certainly could have had a point docked as well. Personally, I'm kind of glad that the official decided to let things go, since the tenor of the fight seemed to suit both guys in their own way. Cruz got a chance to work the torso, above and occasionally below the legal target area with relative impunity. Davis had the opportunity to spoil, and employ a few of the dark arts in return. He knew Cruz was dirty AF going in, and opted to beat him to the proverbial illegal strike. It's not exactly honorable, but honor doesn't always apply. Both guys seemed relatively content with the manner in which things unfolded, and I found it, whiled scrappy at points, to still be an entertaining watch.
It seemed the ref was always having to tell Davis to stop with the illegal tactics. He should have been deducted a point or two it was so blatant. On top of that everytime Cruz got close he tied him up and he should have been warned about that as well.
So Davis was wearing Winning Gloves, the gloves that are made to protect the hands. Now it makes sense why his punches didnt look to have alot of pop on them. Oddily enough, even with those gloves on he still was able to hurt his hand, which kind of makes the rumors of a hand injury during camp plausible. Hmmm
That's exactly how I had it and I was real close to calling this a draw. When scoring a fight I like to mark the rounds I think were close so I can judge what the scoring might be if some of those rounds went the other way. I might see someone having Cruz 115-113, but I will stick with that score the other way.
Yeah, exactly, a 115-113 score either way or a draw is reasonable. And yet all the whiners who seem to hate it when a favored fighter pulls out a close decision against an underdog who does better than expected were screaming "robbery." This distorted view of what constitutes a robbery devalues the term.
Man i would have thought for sure that the majority of votes would have went for Cruz. For once im glad that an ESB poll got it right.
