I have that on DVD. Laguna found a home for that right lead, and just bled Ramos to death with it. Credit to him. Horrible stylistic matchup for Mando. He would never beat Laguna. Too much speed.
I remember those lightweight fights in the late 60's early 70's when you read a lot of the fight reports in "Ring" & KO mags 3 weeks after the fights. Ramos, Laguna, Carasco (that guy from Spain), and maybe Carlos Ortiz trying to make a comeback.....fights left & right.
Think it finishes in 9. Laguna is superb in this using his fast feet and hands to land with accuracy on Ramos's face. One thing I love about this fight is how loud the crowd is, it nearly broke the speakers on my TV the first time I watched it.
Gee Lugua was razor sharp in his prime, it takes something extra to land right hand leads with that ease. I always thought he was a little past his peak against Kenny even in their first go.
Well, this fight took place earlier that same year. A bit odd how much better he looked in it, even taking into account the differences in opposition. He looked just as good for parts of the Ramos fight as he did in the footage of the first Ortiz fight, in my opinion.
Laguna has many admirers ,but I am not among them, he seemed a triumph of style over substance to me.Exceedingly fast of hand and foot, he rarely engaged ,and a lot of his punches seemed designed to finish just before contact a bit like Howard Davis.I thought him a show boat a minority opinion ,but mine.
The difference is: Laguna proved himself among the very elite, whereas Davis did nothing of the sort, and even had his faults exposed against less than stellar opposition. Fair play to you if you're not a fan of his style, but you can't deny he was an excellent fighter.
I would not call him a great fighter, an in shape Ortiz exposed him in their rematch.Laguna beat some good fighters but only one great [Ortiz] and he was out of shape and overconfident, he put the record straight in two subsequent fights. The best fighters Laguna met, [Ortiz & Buchanan], beat him.Mando Ramos was a very good fighter who might have become great, but for two things, he was a coke addict and partied every night ,and his eyebrows opened up if you looked at them hard.
