You would think Laguna, but Ray was one of those guys who did better when you didn't think he would and worse when you thought he might do better. He did beat Ramirez.
I also roll my eyes at the parrots who chime in the time-worn phrase "glorified clubfighter." Rather lazy and unimaginative response.
Laguna, a member of the stockpile of very good lightweights of the late 60's & early 70's. Laguna by late TKO in a close fight over Mancini. This content is protected 1970-03-03 : Ismael Laguna 135 lbs beat Mando Ramos 134½ lbs by TKO in round 9 of 15 Location: Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA Referee: Lee Grossman 6-3 Judge: Dick Young 5-4 Judge: John Thomas 5-3 "Elusive Ismael Laguna of Panama won the world lightweight championship Tuesday night when titleholder Mando Ramos could not continue after nine rounds because of eye cuts. The Panamanian's jabbing tactics opened cuts over both eyes of the champion and he bled so profusely his manager Jackie McCoy asked referee Lee Grossman to halt the fight. After an even first round Laguna opened the first cut in the corner of the champion's left eye. Ramos' handlers managed to stem the flow for several rounds and Ramos had an edge through the first five rounds. In the ninth round Laguna's jabs caught Ramos' right eye which also began bleeding and the Panamanian easily piled up points as Ramos had difficulty seeing. It was then McCoy decided to halt the fight." -United Press International Unofficial scorecards through 9 rounds UPI - 4-2 Laguna Long Beach Press-Telegram - 5-3 Laguna L.A. He's just a 21 year old and I figured we'll get him next time." -Jackie McCoy, Ramos' manager "You know, they (Ramos and McCoy) had a contract to fight us in Panama and they ran out on it. We're thinking more about Pedro Carrasco of Spain." -Cain Young, Laguna's manager, on a proposed rematch "It would seem to me that Ramos is the logical guy." -Don Chargin, Olympic Boxing Club matchmaker, exercising the Olympic's option on Laguna's first title defense
Style all wrong for Boom Boom. Similar to Bramble fights. Boom Boom so courageous and never stops trying but is stopped by the stylish Iguana on cuts late.
Although I have Laguna winning a hard earned UD as stated above I do not see him having the power to stop Mancini. Mancini better than given credit for.
Wrong opponent for Ray. And even though Mancini goes out on his shield, he does go out. A long sustained pounding before he goes out. The wear and tear a guy like Boom Boom takes in his fights is like a highway with toll booths every 1/2 mile on a long trip. Constantly paying a toll just wears him out & his opponent selection determines how long he lasts. He needs sloppy defense guys that love to trade. Most likely, even a good jab with movement is bad news---like an O'Grady or Kenty even.
Mancini seemed to lose some fire after the Kim fight (Understandable) Prior to Kim though he fought well against the legendary A.Arguello. If Arguello couldn't stop Mancini until the 14th rd with the dynamite he carried in both hands I don't see Laguana having the fire power to stop Mancini at all unless of course by cuts. I see a hard fought split dec win by Laguana, but wouldn't be surprised at all if that split dec went to Mancini because of his aggression and pressure .
