I noticed that white american boxer Travis Kaufmann's nickname is great white hope or something like that. That got me to thinking. Looking at most of the belt holders from middleweight on up, from Kelly Pavlik, to Arthur Abraham, to Carl Froch, to Adamek, to the Klitschko brothers, to Lucian Bute, to Mikkel Kessler etc. etc. one finds something like 17 out of 20 belts being held by white men. I do realize that some of these white "champions" like maybe Balzsay, or Valuev/Chageav, are hardly excellent boxers, but it seems to me that from middleweight on up, the term "great white hope" has had its significance and relevance obliterated by the wave of mostly Eastern European boxers who have emerged in the last years.
black fighters are more naturally gifted and theres no doubt about that - but especially at heavy the level of discipline you have and your environment is a big factor regarding how you turn out..... black atheletes are more gifted but the problem is that if they have a 'challenged' upbringing' then it can undo all that hard work. and thats heart-breaking for a trainer.
It's really a U.S. thing, and yes, it is becoming increasingly dated. But as long as non-whites are dominant in the sport, there will be some attracted to the "great white hope" concept.
the reason why you're ignorant is exactly the reason why you say things like this. but you only do it becasue you've been pushed into a corner already but dont have enough character to rise above popular opinion.
I thought it was an old racist term from the dark days? White boxers can beat black ones, they do all the time. Why does it matter if black guys are dominant, which they aren't as much any more? It is an archaic term.
It is 2009 not 1909. The term "Great White Hope" is ridiculous and I find it very offensive. I am sure others agree with me also.
I'd take the great green hope at this point. Just somebody get in here and do something about this jeez.
you're trying to buy time because of you are in real life. that isnt going to help you while i'm on the board. but you cvan keep trying if you want.
because you're not mature enough enough to learn from the people around you. if you want to sit there and play 'rep boy' - which is what you do most the time but only because you think there are no consequences for that - then you'll never be anything other than what you are now.
