    Appreciation Thread
Israel Vázquez is a retired 36 year old 5'4.5 Super Bantamweight with a 44-5 32 KO's 4 KO losses. Born in Mexico City, Mexico he started his career on March 29, 1995 unfortunately he fought his whole career in a lower division, that doesn't get near the attention and credit it deserves in this country, but even then his amazing quartet with Rafael Marquez has become the stuff of legend, mirroring the decade long war of Pacquiao and Marquez, Juan Manuel's younger brother Rafael was waging a far more brutal battle against Israel, they obsessively fought over 4 times over a brief 3 year period, the amount of damage they did to one another basically cost them both their careers. Israel had to sadly hang up his gloves after the 4th and last fight, because the scar tissue had become so severe that it would be an instant target and liability for him if he were to continue on in his career.
The ending of the 4th fight was truly one of the saddest endings to a career I've ever seen, it ended not with a bang but with a whimper a great warrior like Vazquez deserved a far better sendoff than that.

Along the way he was the first to stop now famous Jhonny Gonzalez back in 2006, he was also the first to stop Oscar Larios, Larios came back with a TKO for Israel in the 2nd match and then Israel got his payback in match again right before he fought Manny. So 1 Quartet and 1 Trilogy not bad for 1 career, outdoing fellow countryman Erik Morales who only participated in 2 Trilogies.

Now that he's retired Israel is a trainer at his Magnifico Boxing Gym and resides in Huntington Park, California. So Check out one of the great, all action, unheralded, truly Mexican Warriors. El Magnifico Israel Vázquez.:toney:toney:toney:toney

I refuse to acknowledge Vazquez vs. Marquez as anything but a trilogy.

Maybe the GOAT trilogy...and I know that's a bold statement but I really do think it stands up to the rest.

IV should never have been sanctioned, plain and simple.

Oh, and Jhonny was actually pretty well known already in 2006. His fight with Vazquez had a lot of people excited (in the build up as well as during, because it was see-saw action). It was a very good win at the time for Izzy and has aged like fine wine.

    Remember the Choko Hernandez bout?

Vazquez's then-girlfriend, a hairdresser (not sure if she was his eventual wife and mother of his three children, Laura), had frosted his hair platinum blonde. Within minutes after the opening bell Choko's face was so busted up that Izzy's hair turned first an odd shade of golden-pink and then full-on apple red.

People make a fuss about Malignaggi getting a haircut in the middle of a boxing match? Well Vazquez gave himself a dye job!! Beat that!

Same here, kind of how I refuse to acknowledge Sergio's last 2 fights.
As far as Jhonny's popularity goes, I always try with these threads to keep in mind the newer casual fans, quite frankly and sadly most casuals still don't know who Jhonny is.
I figure since its your birthday for all of your hard thankless work on the RBR's that I'd pay tribute to 2 of your favorite guys:good

    My thoughts exactly.

It's the greatest trilogy ever. I watch them every few months and realise why I fell in love with Boxing to start with.

Less famous but better for my money for pure thrills than Barrera-Morales, Ward-Gatti, Ali-Frazier, or any other.

..and both had already had great careers before they ever met! (which slightly lessens the sting of them ruining each other and not accomplishing much afterward)

I'm of the same mind. Whether or not it is the GOAT trilogy, it's still my favourite, if for no other reason than the fights got better at each meeting - and what a finale!

I don't recognise the fourth bout either - somewhat of a travesty, IMO.
