It isn't as competitive as the rivalry with Larios (well, its overall arc anyway) or with Marquez, or the war with Gonzalez - but his inaugural WBC defense against Choko Hernandez is well worth looking into, and not only for the hilarity of seeing his frosted hair slowly turn a deep shade of labia. It's a nice high-resolution snapshot displaying his excellence of execution in cutting off the ring and apportioning his savage offense, while still honoring the "...and don't get hit" half of the old equation more than his aggressive style really ought to allow by rights (utilizing a one-note but effective defense of covering up and zipping backward in straight lines whenever taking a rest from his earth-scorching) :good PM me if you haven't seen it.
One of my very favourites of all time. No idea why he isn't more widely adored. His series with Larios is one of the better ones post Louis, his trilogy with Marquez is the greatest of all time. They should be this generations Ali-Frazier but they're not because they're wee. Vasquez is the most exciting fighter of his generation IMO, and one of the best fighters of his type that have ever lived, as in, a fighter this exciting and vulnerable. Like a Lopez.
Hey Sal, Check out Vazquez' losing effort against Marcos Licona. It's the fight that made me a fan of Izzy's, even in defeat. A great fight.
The second Larios fight was fabulous, especially in the later rounds and incidentally, both Gatti-Ward I and Hatton-Tsyzu took place the following night. I know the Hatton fight wasn't a great spectacle but it was a hell of an occasion over here anyway. The third Marquez fight is my favourite of all time I think. Usually when a fight has a comparable level of action it can be because boxing has gone out of the window like Gatti-Ward I, or a great chess match might lack the edge of your seat pure excitement of a brawl, like Toney-McCallum I. But Vazquez-Marquez III combines both in a way that maybe even since Leonard-Duran I, only Barrera-Morales I and at a stretch Toney-Jirov, has managed... ...though now I have my thinking cap on for others :yep
The Larios series ain't all that. Vasquez destroys him. Good rematch! Larios opts out on a cut after being floored early in the third. Vasquez-Marquez 1,2,3 takes a massive dump on it.
Yeah, one good fight. larios was never much of a fighter really.A soft champion. Izzy is a truly great action fighter and one of the most solid fighters mentally around on his day, but hardly the most gifted fighter overall.still, he's the type who can give more talented less dedicated fighters a really hard night if they don't respect him.
This was a very poor generation for the sub-feathers in general imo. At least as far as producing fighters of genuine greatness or excellent talent.Still been loads of great fights and competitive matchups to be had.
The 12th round against Marquez in their third fight was surely one of the greatest last round efforts of all time. He needed to win the round big and that's exactly what he went out to do.
Agreed, had me jumping up and screaming at my screen! Amazing, Vasquez is a f'n warrior, well both men are but that last round gave him a one point lead on my card. A Herculean effort!
