Correction: this is technically a welterweight contest, as both men failed to make weight ...in fact, they weren't even close (Giyasov 143lbs, and Coria 143¾lbs)

This was originally supposed to be Giyasov's third defense of the WBA intercontinental super lightweight title, hence the co-feature slot, but is now a non-title 10-rounder.

 

Yeah, if this was someone's first look at Dusmatov it would probably not justify all the hype...but he is a Val Barker recipient and like you said this was just his fourth outing in the pros. He should absolutely be given time for polishing up before he's thrown into contention; no reason to rush things.

 

A little surprised how game Coria is here, considering a) there is no longer any belt at stake for motivation, b) he's coming off a year of inactivity (literally, December 17th of 2020 being his last match) and c) coming off a tough loss in that last fight, getting kayoed by Alberto Puello.

All that on top of the usual psychological baggage of being on the road in enemy territory, and being the guy with eight losses and two draws being fed to an undefeated Olympian.

Giyasov is comfortably ahead, rest assured, but the matchmakers probably envisioned this being much easier work for him. They should've done their homework; Coria once knocked Daud Cino Yordan down, and upset Joel Díaz Jr. not long ago.

 

Shaxram able to rattle off combos of impressive length & frequency in such deep waters. Starting to showboat in round eight - rear fist spun behind his back, etc. He only does that on the outside, though, as Coria has receipts for him up close and Giyasov has learned to respect the deceptively heavy-handed visitor.

 

Should be in the ballpark of 98-92 or so for Giyasov.

If you were attempting to hype up an unitiated party for the pair of Uzbek 2016 Olympic medalists, you definitely wouldn't start off by showing this card.

Which is funny, because this was meant to be a showcase with each of them defending a WBA international belt in chief supporting bouts with opponents that were ostensibly chosen to make them look great.
