Because the opportunity was there to end the fight get the win there and then rather than risk abraham getting in a lucky punch.
I'm curious though, if Direll wasn't laid out like that and got up, would the fight have been stopped? Barrera was just as blatant punching on a downed Marquez and he was only docked a couple of points...
It makes perfect sense. Andre saw the opportunity to get the win via a dq and took it, could argue he is within his rights to do so too.
1. Has Abraham KOed in the late rounds guys who seemed to box with him on par? Yes 2. Was the tide turning late in favor of Abraham? Yes 3. Could Dirrel continue? Physically, Yes. 4. Would the fight have been resumed if Dirrel showed any desire to continue? Yes
You "feel" he took harder punches but your weren't the one in there with Abraham were you? The fact you have been defending this cheater all night means you are either a blind fan, hate Dirrell, or are just playing devil's advocate. Some of your posts make me think it's the 3rd. Watching the fight in slow motion you are gonna get a delayed reaction. There was about one second between Abraham hitting Dirrell and Andre starting to move toward the canvas. He was without question hurt by that punch.
He was boxing at a higher level than Abraham. The tide might have been turning but Dirrell clearly won round 9 so it wasn't what most AA fans are making it out to me. Physically he could not continue. He was KO'd by a scumbag who couldn't get the job done legit. The 4th point you made has no relevance to this situation. He was in no shape to continue.
In less than five minutes he was running, jumping and whining all over the ring. So he could continue. 4th point is just that referee would allow the fight to continue depending on Dirrel "condition" or attitude and Dirrel knew that.
No, the decision was wrong. My point here is that the ref should make decisions, with the rules are guide rather than simply blindly following it like robots.
Dirrell didn't "seem to box with him on par", he made him look like a complete fool for 9 rounds. And the fact that Abraham has KO'd guys in the late rounds doesn't mean he would definitely do it vs Dirrell. Hell, Abraham took away the chance to go for the KO from himself. Slightly, yes. But Abraham opening up doesn't mean he was gonna get the KO. Having a brilliant counter puncher with respectable power in front of him, he could easily find himself knocked down or out. Don't forget that Dirrell was easily the best fighter AA had ever faced. This is a moot point, because it wasn't Dirrell's fault the fight was stopped.
1. How did he know that the ref would make the right call? 2. Why did he put an over-the-top display involving convulsions and leg twitching? Would you have done that? 3. Is there any precedent in the history of boxing of a fighter faking a knock-out and twitching on the ground? Answer those questions for me.
