If the rumors are true then it seems he's heading to matchroom now to face either Munguia or Berlangas, two clearly lower level opponents he'd have no issue bulldozing through. Something's definitely not right with him to be taking all these easy fights when he wasn't doing this not too long ago. It all seems to have changed after the Bivol fight. Before that point he typically took on some of the best, if not the best in 154, 160 and 168. He was doing that routinely, but ever since the Bivol fight its been GGG3, Ryder, Charlo and now either Munguia or Berlangas. There is of course the Crawford stuff that went on and Jermall is still a possible option either in May or September. His competition is getting weaker, not stronger. Reynoso just recently put out a statement acknowledging Canelo has been ducking Benavidez with seemingly no plans to ever fight him. When questioned about whether or not that hurts Canelo's lacy, Reynoso seemed confident it wont. I agree in regards to Benavidez, but the issue here is Canelo seems intent on not fighting anyone at 168 who could be top tier material. I could be wrong, but I really think this is the problem with him. Having his head beaten in by Bivol for 12 rounds was simply too much for the guy and he cracked.
The reason the Benavidez fight was not made was because PBC didn't make Canelo an offer. PBC is crumbling right now. They didn't even have Canelo's 35 million guarantee for May, that is why Canelo was able to walk away from his PBC contract. PBC was unable to meet their side of the deal. Benavidez just re-signed with PBC, and I heard it's for several years. Benavidez' next fight is in June, so even if Canelo does fight Benavidez it won't be until 2024, problem is that Benavidez is now fighting at 175, and if he beats Gvozdyk in June he's becomes the mandatory for the winner of Bivol-Beterbiev.
