Stronger, sure, but he still lost most of the rounds from that point on and got backed up and outjabbed all night long. The rounds he won were all very thin.
I'm sorry, my maths have deserted me tonight. Ward needed to have won 7 of the next ten rounds after the knockdown. Do you think he did?
There was maybe one or two rounds that I though Ward clearly won in rounds 3-12, and I thought there were also a couple that were pretty clear to Kovalev, and all three judges gave all of the close rounds to Ward.
I think fundamentally Ward lost this fight in the first half. Yes he adjusted and came on strong and prob would have deserved a UD had it gone 15. But it didn't and he ran out of time. He was bailed out by his fellow Americans sat ringside tonight even though a thoroughly prepped Ward would prob dominate a rematch. That's just the way I see it. Ward fans know he was fortunate tonight.
He showed heart, skill and determination to make it close. That still doesn't change my opinion of who won. Ward had too much to do in the second half of the fight to justify a getting a decision. Put it this way if Kovalev were also American I'm pretty much certain he would have got the nod tonight. And Ward would easily win a deserved UD in a rematch IMHO but tonight? Nah.
This is the equivalent of *******s saying any of the first 3 Marquez-Pacquiao fights could have gone either way. MVC saying it could have gone either way is really an admission that Ward lost. I had it 117-110 Kovalev. Fight wasn't even close. Politics rule the day again. Whats new in boxing?
Well the American contingent sure seems to be launching a pretty comprehensive PR campaign! Willie is claiming that Ward didn't have home advantage as Kovalev has fought so much in America! It is what it is, Ward made it close enough to justify US judges giving him a decision. He had to gut it out to get there so I can't slate the man. He's figure Sergei out now but he was a lucky guy tonight. We all know it.
