Very bad result. The fact that it was uniform across the judges is also statistically noteworthy - if my recollection is correct usually in these situations you get one or two suspect judges? Said from the 10th the judges would give it to Ward so at least I recouped the bookies loss with side bets.
Yes I agree 3rd, 4th was Wards rounds and from 6th up Ward simply broke him down with body shots. People pay to much attention to numbers of Lederman and compubox. I watch fights with no volume for that reason. I didn't score live but I know I had giving Ward more rounds. In a rematch Ward stops him when he watches and realizes the damage he was doing with body shots which he stopped using from about the 9th round
Home cooking and corrupt officiating definitely exist in boxing. How many times have we seen it? Who can deny that it happens? The scores for Hooker vs Perez on the undercard were also corrupt.
I had it wide for Ward. After the first two rounds which I gave to Kovalev, I thought he would go on to dominate. In fact what happened is he threw very little, and was consistently outboxed and frustrated by Ward. Seems people were very influenced by firstly the knockdown, and secondly the idiot American casters. If you watched the British cast, they all scored it for Ward and as Malignaggi pointed out did not blindly score rounds for Kovalev based on ineffective aggression. Lederman ALWAYS scores his fights for the aggressor whether they are boxing well or not.
Yeah he looked the best in the round 7-9 I tihnk and was not that smart to showboat in the 10th. However he maybe wanted to draw Kovalev out abit and make him make a misstake.
You realise Ward and Hunter didn't score it wide for Ward? He knows he got given a favourable set of cards.
Ward dug deep and pulled the fight out. None of his rounds were dominant but he started to do the more effective work after the knockdown. Kovalev kind of faded, started missing punches, and getting sloppy. Ward became the ring general and made Kovalev fight his fight rather than the other way around.
Well in fairness Max and Roy repeatedly insisted that Ward may have won many of the rounds that Lederman scored for Kovalev.
Agreed, but it was never gonna be pretty on here after the fight, especially following a Ward win. There seemed to be a much deeper emotional bond between Sergey and his fans than on the other side of the equation. I'm not gonna speculate as to why...
I'd say the better fighter overall won and would easily again in a rematch but last night? You gotta be kidding me. You biased fan boys aside, everyone knows Kovalev won yesterday. By the time Ward had worked him out it was too late. Listen to Hunter in the corner before Ward went out for round 12. You can hear the panic in his voice as he knows they need the judges to have cast a favourable eye on all of his fighters work whilst discounting all of Kovalev's for Andre to get the W.
Maybe it wasn't robbery but it was still a home cooking decision, they gave all the close rounds to Ward.
