Very competitive fight until the very end. Hardly any body work from Cotto, which was surprising. We will see if Cotto comes back with an unquenched hunger for revenge/comes back better than ever - maybe a rematch down the road with a different fight plan; or if this fight ruined him. Major respect to both fighters. P.S....The first or 2nd round, Cotto sprung his back off the ropes after Marg missed, put his WHOLE body into it will full torque (It was a straight left out of the southpaw stance) and ****ing rocked Marg. It was a monster of a shot, biggest shot I've seen in awhile, and should be added to the "Hardest punch you seen a fighter take without going down or being hurt" thread. :yep A true testament to Toney's beard.
yeah, it was a competitive contest through out. it's not like cotto was thoroughly destroyed through 12 rounds. it was slow accumulation of damage that did it.
Yeah mate i made a similar thread to this, people act like Margo was shutting him out when Cotto finally fell.
It definately was not a one sided beat down. Cotto landed a incredible amount of bombs and until the 6th or 7th round it looked like he was going to outclass margo and run away with it. They traded some serious fist missles.
Very True! It was by no means a onesided fight. However....MARG made it seem as though it was onesided. The NUMBERS won't justify what many saw. Marg was a machine! He was eating some hellacious bombs from cotto but nothing stunned or hurt Marg. He just walked him down and applied the kind of pressure Marg is known for. The chin on this guy is nasty. He really had one thing on his mind and that was to wear Cotto down by the end of the fight....and that is how it played out. Someone needs to check my man's DNA! Marg was somthing else on Saturday considering that it was apparent that cotto was the far better boxer.....but Boxing is also about FIGHTING...and I think Marg embodies this aspect of the sweet Science.!!!! Someone Check the man's DNA For real!
I don't remember seeing Margarito rocked at all. He was probably hit, and then he probably jogged after Cotto again and worked to the body and head. Story of the fight.
It was a VERY competitive fight, with Cotto owning the first half and Margarito taking over in the second. Cotto took a beating. It wasn't a beatdown.
Agree with all of the above! On your second point... I am a Cotto fan (not a Marg hater I hasten to add) and thought he was going to romp home to a victory dishing out a schooling akin to Mayweather v Gatti. But Jesus, that Mexican is awesome! Never seen somebody get schooled so much in the opening of a fight, to then turn it completely on its head and reverse the flow of the fight. Both men deserve to be respected for their efforts and I am now a new member of the Marg fan club :good One other point... If Cotto had tried to tie Marg up in the mid rounds (6,7,8 for example) do you think the fight would have ended the same why? And if not, why did Cotto's corner not tell him to do this? I'm not making excuses, Marg deserved the win and it was an astonishing fight. Just a point of debate.
Cotto foguht a great boxing match where Margarito fought a great fight Margaritos pressure and power shots where not as recognizable as Cottos flashy combos but Margarito in the ned was doing the most damage I dont think anyone could have fought a better boxing match even little Avoid Floyd Its just Margs slowly added pressure like a python
He threw this a couple of times and it worked (as in - it landed) but none of them were as strong as the one early on - and it could have been a prime Earnie Shavers throwing that punch and Marg would not have gone down that night!
hell no was it, margarito was pressuring cotto all night but the first half of the fight defently belonged to cotto he won 5 of the 6 rounds and was countering margarito with ease
Paddy -- refer to the bold part of the quote. I think Cotto could have won if he had focused more on keeping the fight in the middle of the ring. Arm length is equal between these two, and Cotto is a much faster and slicker boxer. He should have been able to use hit and run tactics to maintain control. He also should have clinched and forced a break when he did get pushed back. However, I'm afraid Cotto may have a bit of the Tommy Hearns syndrome: He may be psychologically incapable of staying out of a war. Tony could have ended this fight 2 or 3 rounds sooner. He could benefit from studying what Pavlik does when he has his man on the ropes; use subtle footwork to keep him there. Cotto moved away almost exclusively to his own left. All Margo needed to do was anticipate that and step 12" to his own right. He never did seem to be able to anticipate Cotto's moves.
cotto was putting on a boxing clinic in my view, espcially the first half of the fight. Margartio was relentless is his pursuit while other fighters would have been demoralized, margartio continued plugging away. Heart, desire to succeed was greater than cotto's when it boiled down to it. They breed monsters in tijuna. Marg beats Williams in the rematch. Floyd is staying retired
