Do you think Queensberry did overestimate Itauma's power ord underestimate Hrgovic chin?

 

I think they took a calculated gamble because the rewards we,re so big. If Moses got his hands on that title it was pretty much straight to huge money fights. The 2nd youngest heavyweight champion ever and Warren would have avoided having to shell out a good bit of money bringing guys over that wanted a decent wedge to fight a huge prospect.

Plus he has Hrgovic in his stable to boot.

But in hindsight Moses shouldnt have been in that fight. He had the skill just always going to be a big gamble...without the experience/preparation needed to face someone like Hrgovic.

In hindsight the kid wasnt ready. As good as he is i m not sure any heavyweight massive prospect went for a title so unprepared in terms of fight preparation against a guy as solid as Hrgovic. Mike Tyson never. Muhammad Ali never. Lennox Lewis never. Tyson Fury never.

 

We all saw hrgovic surviving zhang. After watching this only an idiot would prepare his fight vs hrgovic thinking that it will last less than 9 rounds.

It is ok to be optimistic and think that you can KO him, but no way your plan can be based on not reaching round 12. And when your are 21 and you gass out in round 9 without being heavily pummeled, clearly your plan didnt involve round 12. Someone ****ed up big time in itaumas corner. Stupid strategy.

 

The point is he should have been ready, meaning ready to fight 12 rounds. He clearly was ready in terms of skill but his team failed in preparing him for a 12 round fight.

 

Yet the history of the sport pretty much shows us very very few took the risk with a massive propect mainly because you need more than gym preparation. You need the necessary learning fights. The history shows us that.

Every fighter also tells us that....you can be as fit as you want in the gym but without the fight experience its a gamble regardless of how much gym preparations been done.

 

They made the mistake of letting the youngster face the Croatian, but it wasn't an easy mistake to predict or avoid. The risk assessment was a bit more difficult here than, for example, in the Joe Joyce-Zhang fight.

They probably relied on the calculation that we have a faster, offensive monster and a much slower tough guy who is also extremely susceptible to cuts. We're the star and the organizer, so if necessary, slightly damaging the Croatian and ending the fight is also an option.

It was really hard to predict that Filip would unleash such a storm in such good condition. Few people were betting on it.

However, the mistake, and a big one, was to assume that the fight wouldn't go the distance and to assume that Moses had such strong endurance that he could afford to try to break down such a top-class fighter from the start, as if he were only half a tier higher than his predecessors, who capitulated early in the fight after their initial successful accelerations. It was a catastrophic tactical error stemming from pride and disregard for his opponent. That's absolutely what happened. The fact that Moses has said in interviews that there's no point in staying in the ring too long and that he rarely spars for 12 full rounds suggests they overindulged in his offensive capabilities, forgetting that boxing can be fickle, and that a fight can often turn from a sprint into a marathon of sustained, hard work.

And it's important to remember that, thanks to Usyk, they were given the opportunity to accelerate their careers very quickly. Itauma had been the talk of the town for a long time. The rankings were pushing him up, the world was pushing him up, and they were generally turning him into someone he didn't have the right to be. This bucket of cold water can have two effects. It sounds cliché, but either Moses learns from his mistakes and becomes better, or he loses confidence in his abilities and loses his quality.

 

It's fair to critique his lack of stamina or fitness, what isn't fair is claiming he "quit".

Gassing out isn't quitting (**** preparation, sure). Quitting is taking a knee, refusing to get back up or refusing to leave your corner. He fought until he physically couldn't continue.

I'm pretty sure you're the only one here claiming he quit as well. It's a very odd stance to take imo.

 

The problem is according to Moses, he was never even gym ready to go 12 rounds because he never sparred 12 rounds. How is that not an error by the team in terms of preparation?

 

Yet Itauma was the one who had to be saved by his corner and left the ring on a stretcher.

Moses dominated until he didn't. Hrgovic gutted it out and hung in there until Itauma folded. We saw who had the real intestinal fortitude and it wasn't the hype job no matter how much glazing you're giving him over a 9 round stoppage LOSS!

Listen to pretty much every fighter. It doesnt matter if he done 100 12 round spars. Without the learning fights under the lights....the 12 round spars wont be enough not for it to be a massive risk putting a prospect or a 21 year old in with someone on the level of Hrgovic.

Hence why so few ever done it. Mike Tyson never done it. Tyson Fury never. Lennox Lewis never. Muhammad Ali never. Joe Frazier never. Why didnt they not just do 12 round spars and fast track to World titles without the learning fights?

Mainly because 12 round spars wont prepare you for it. Moses would have still gassed out the same way with 12 round spars or not.

it made hrgovic's shot at a title easier..
if the fight wasn't for the title, and how hrgovic beat him, it would've been interesting what would've happened next for him..
would he have gotten a title shot???

even in the dubois fight, and how he lost that one, if he would've beaten dubois, would he have been declared champion??

I thought the same. As a speed fighter he would massively benefit from being in the 230 range imo. Mid 240s is way too heavy for him.
