Just had this thought...in a fight where a fighter like Jones just doesn't have the legs anymore to go 12, he will fight at a lower intensity to survive, hoping that his punches are more effective and hoping to find that one big punch. But just imagine how different Jones would fight if he only had to go 8 rounds, say! He'd be more active in each round, he'd work more, he'd work faster/more intensively, he'd give Calzaghe a much closer fight and the end result would be a much higher quality fight than we're likely to get over 12 rounds. It would be a fairer contest too, because it would concentrate more on quality rather than quantity. I wish these legends who are not there anymore physically would not be involved in 12 rounders anymore, but instead, in action packed 8 or 10 rounders. Calzaghe v. Hopkins would have been a much better fight had it been over 8 or 10 rounds instead of 12, too, I think. No?:good
Anything can happen, it is pointless to say what Jones has anymore thats something Jones himself doesn't know. Fighting Tito is not exactly a test for any decent fighter today. ANd since the level of motivation for both fighters in this fight is superb. We are only about to find out how much water is there left in the well. but I beleive whatever left is enough to beat Joe 8-10 rounds doesn't really mean action packed fight
Sure...but the chances of the fight being more intense are greater... Take a long distance race for example: a 1500 m race can be very tactical; it doesn't have to go at close to 1500m record pace from the start...the pace could be that of a 3000 m race for a long time...BUT...chances are the pace will be faster in a 1500 m race than in a 3000 m race, just because it's a shorter race. Same with this fight...if Jones thinks he could fight a very intense fight but only for 8 rounds, say, he might do it, in an 8 round fight...but in a 12 round fight, even if he wanted to do it, he'd be less likely to do it unless he took a big risk going for the KO by the 8th round or so...no?
Why? Joe Calzaghe isn't here to cater to his opponents needs. He is a 12 round fighter. If Hopkins and Jones are happy to take the big money, it is there problem if they struggle in areas. Joe is 36 too.
Don't usually agree with you on a lot of subjects but you are spot on their. I mean they ain't novices or journeyman.
if this was 5 to 6 years ago calzaghe would gave got thrashed by hopkins and jones.. hopkins didn't have the aggressiveness and stamina at 43 to stay wit calzaghe just his ring smarts which is what he used to defeat kelly pavlik... jones would have have probably knocked out calzaghe. look how many flush shots he took from a 43 year old hopkins
