It's about that time again in The Heavyweight Division (The New Era of the Division)

This happens about every decade or so, the division gets a facelift. For better or for worse, the Heavyweight Division changes. It happens slowly and doesn't happen right away. Prospects begin to rise up and become formidable contenders and the older fighters start to get weeded out. The Champions either retire or lose and never regain their glory.

In the 70's we had Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Shavers, Norton, Quarry, Bonavena, Ellis, Young, etc..

The 80's rolls around and we have Holmes, Witherspoon, Weaver, Berbick, Spinks, Tubbs, Tucker, etc..

Then the 90's: Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, Golota, Tua, McCall, Tyson(comeback), Moorer, Foreman(Comeback) and etc..

Now we find ourselves on the tail end of the 2000 decade. During this decade, Lewis' reign spiiled over from the 90's to 2003. This is when the Klitschko brothers were starting to take over after Lewis retired. This decade has been the worst in history but atleast we have a dominant figure at the top.

This will all change in a few years as Vitlai is old and should soon retire. His brother, Wladimir, is the best in the division but is 33 and should soon experience a period of slipping in two years when he hits 35. Whether he retires on top or gets beaten remains to be seen and is a ways off.

We are starting to see some new fighters come through in Haye, Arreola, Dimitrenko, Johnson, Boytsov, Chambers, Povetkin, Solis etc... These fighters are not that far off from title shots.

Then we have fighters that are going to be a few years off from getting their shots like Wilder, Hamer, Fury, Tupou, M. Perez, Wawrzyk, etc..

With these new contenders rising up I have to say that I am happy with the direction of the division. I think we are going to be in for a decade of better Heavyweight Boxing. I am not going to say that it is going to be a classic, but it will certainly be better than the poor era we have now.
