That has absolutely nothing to do with Lampley's not-so-subtle bias. I wasn't even rooting for hopkins... he took a bad beating. But Lampley's lack of objectivity was absurd last night.

He didn't used to be like that, I think that's the main reason they got rid of him. The Floyd confrontation was just the tipping point.
His 'wit' was what got him there in the first place. It was actually a little sad in his later years when you could hear him struggling to put his metaphors and analogies together to the point that you could sense the other commentators wanting to talk over him cause the point he was making wasn't worth the time it took him to spit it out.

Isn't Lampley the 'Play by Play' member of the team? Colour commentary is all about insight and opinion ie the fighter (Roy) or the storyteller (Merchant). That's why Merchant's post fight interview were so often tense, he has to tell the fighter exactly what he thinks of their performance, like asking Bernard if he felt ashamed about the level of opposition he was facing after one of his MW defenses.

Exactly. A play-by-play announcer is supposed to announce the fight factually, without any bias or perceived favoritism, but do his best to make it sound exciting nonetheless (granted that's not always easy). He refused to comment on anything hopkins landed whatsoever and flipped out every time Kovalev threw a punch, even if hopkins clearly rolled it.

It's not hopkins' job to respect anyone, it's his job to fight. It IS Lampley's job to present an unbiased version of events to the best of his ability, however.

Didn't watch it on HBO, but I remember Lampley as being a great commentator. Kellerman as the reporter, on the other hand often shows very much bias and very little knowledge. Other than Kellerman (and Merchant from time to time in his day), HBO has a very good team.

As for Showtime, Al Bernstein usually does fair job, but he's sometimes just awful. However SHO has a solid team overall. Jim Gray is just world class.

Atlas on ESPN is probably one of the worst boxing commentators.

    Thats where you're wrong.
Knowledgeable boxing fans would like to hear and watch an unbiased broadcast, but the reality is that Lampley gets paid to depict and drive the HBO house agenda home. To the detriment of the knowledgeable fan, Lampley does a great job at it.

Lampley consistently lies to the boxing public to serve his own agenda. In the Pac vs Algieri promo he said that Pac was the p4p king and in his series The Fight Game he listed Ward as one of many fighter that were afraid to challenge Trip G. Casual fans have a tendency to believe what the commentators are saying and statements like that can have an effect on how they view a particular fighter and how they spend their money to some extent. He embellishes average fights and goes hog wild and squeals like a ***** on good fights. He's a master of the overkill. I don't even listen to him anymore.

A great job by Lampley. Hopkins isn't exactly the most professional of people in the sport. In fact, he has shown over and over again to be an a$$.

I am glad he is now out of the picture, and a new Champ has taken helm.
