I HOPE, I really hope they're just picking him for the novelty of such an old guy winning a big fight like this. There was no way Hopkins was winning this fight. It seems like only a handful of people were able to see that Kovalev is the complete package. He really has it all. Instead, he was labeled "puncher" and people said "BHop knows how to take away power" etc. Did these people not watch Kovalev fight before this? Could they not see the many facets and sophistication to his game? If it's the latter, boxing fans are in a sad state. I rightfully claimed I thought Kovalev should be a 10-1 favorite. This fight was a mismatch, not a pickem like everyone loved to say. I'd love to say a simple I told you so, but I'm more sad that people just can't pick out a future great from a run of the mill puncher.
I too am amazed at how many people thought B-Hop could win. Almost fifty years old (how many athletes do you see in any other sport at that age?) Has not scored a knock out in 10 years and up against a very heavy handed undefeated champion. This was a no brainer that Kovalev would win. I am very impressed that Hopkins went the distance. Incredible performance for the almost fifty year old warrior!
After picking against Bhop for the last 10 years and being wrong each time its not easy to pick against Bhop. I was not one of them though. However I was surprised that he was able to go full 12.
What I took away from this match is that Kovalev has a question on his ability. He really didn't execute the way everyone predicted, especially against a Hopkins of that age and recent performance curve. By all rights it should have been a blowout early KO. I know Hopkins is among the best ever at not conceding angles but all the other factors were stacked very much for Kovalev.
Not as amazing as you picking Shumenov over Hopkins now that was an embarrassingly bad pick. Or you thinking Hopkins would fake a low blow in round 3 to get out of the fight that was ******ed and we all know you should never go full ******.
I picked Kova by UD, but really I can understand why some went with Hopkins. I picked Kova because I trusted what I saw in the ring from these two independent of their opponents.... but sometimes the eye tests fails and certain guys look really good mainly because they are fighting subpar comp, and considering Kova really is/was untested at that next level of boxing, I can sympathize with people who thought Hopkins would be the one to show him the holes he didn't know were there. But anyone who picks enough boxing matches will have their batch of bad picks.... it happens.
Yes and they were all idiots who simply wanted to discredit Hopkins. Hopkins somehow gets dropped twice by Pascal but doesn't quit but loses 2 close rounds to Dawson so must have faked his injury from a blatant foul. That kind of logic belongs in an asylum. The build up to this fight was like watching a political election. So much crap being thrown at BHop by petty minded posters like yourself.
I fancied Hopkins to win a tight decision cause I didn't know how intelligent kov would be in this fight I was wrong, kov boxed great and didn't allow himself to be drawn into Hopkins kind of fight Won very easily and props to him
I rate Kovalev very highly and his boxing skill, but even I didn't expect him to outbox Hopkins this much, I thought it was either going to be Hopkins UD, possibly late TKO or a Kovalev early KO.
that is promotional hype, fans get deluded.. also now i read thread kovalev ko`s ward. probably that ts didnt watch kovalev fight neither...
