I believe that the American Bernard Hopkins got beat good by journeymen early on but went on to become an ATG. ALthough Ricky wont do that, the lesson is that one should look at current and recent form, because you'd be a tithead to say Hopkins was a bum for losing early on to nobody.
The really funny thing is that the whole Brook hype on the general forum has been a joke taking the **** out of people like the OP. Completely overhyping Brook to make out he's one of the most avoided fighters in boxing, making out his victories are so much greater than they are and just general doing the exact kind of thing the OP is accusing Brits of doing. Best part is that most other people seem to be taking it seriously. So much over hyping of British fighters on this forum is done by a certain few posters and is very tongue in cheek. Most people fail to see the humour though - which to me just makes it funnier.
Don't you people dare say Kell is a joke!:fire Every positive word said on here about him is true.I know it is and when Santa brings me my Kell Brook 2013 annual I'll prove it. *******s!
As in most people that must mean Yanks and while i do like them, it's only dawned on me in recent months that they don't do sarcasm at all.
BULL****. Lets get one thing REALLY straight. Every supermouthed, pea brained American on every forum on the net was saying Lacy was this, that, and the other, and would kill J.Calzaghe. It was only AFTER Joe made the knobhead look like he had NEVER been inside a ring before that they changed their minds and said Jeff was over rated. That was unavoidable because to try to defend the American hype over Lacy would have taken ******edness to a new level even for them. Secondly lets try one of the most over rated fighters ever ( Tyson ) another American. Fact is, everyone who ever fought the cretin back KHTFO. Good at bullying junkies, alchoholics, and bums, but thats it. Now how about the current American hype? There is good reason for people to believe this guy is doing everything within his capabilities to avoid fighting a fella who won his first title at the same weight as a bag of cement, yet listen to his American fans and he is the best thing since chewing gum. Lastly, i dont think anyone from a country that boasts Hollywood, Disneyland, and Las Vegas should be lecturing anyone else about hype.
I know the Brook thing on the General has become a joke, but personally I don't really get the point of trolling. Brook was so obvious on here that it was okay, but people were doing it with Haye and all that "matrix" stuff and several other UK fighters. So many fight fans are biased, deluded idiots that all it means is that lots of fans from around the world genuinely get the idea that British fans are obsessive, stupid fanboys. Back on the old Seconds Out forum, Brit fans were regarded as some of the most level headed, as it was all real boxing fans with good knowledge and a fair amount of objectivity. The Brit forum here has a lot of those sorts, but trolling the General just makes us look like the other idiots IMO. However, Brook is different as that trolling was obvious to all but the most stupid and was quite funny. However, Brook has also been getting hyped on the Brit forum and by many British fans for a couple of years now and some were saying he would beat Khan back when he had barely fought an opponent with a pulse.
I think British people in general tend to underrate their best athletes/teams/sportsmen. It's pretty much the British mentality to really get behind the underdog and when we do have a class act, the general opinion is generally a bit critical of them. Think about guys like Lewis, Eubank and Calzaghe. They were three incredibly skilled fighters and yet they weren't as popular as three flawed boxers in Bruno, Benn and Hatton. That's what British people like. We like the underdogs, the guys who shouldn't be world champions and yet somehow overcome the odds. Ricky Hatton, a normal guy who you could meet down the pub and have a laugh with, shouldn't ever be able to dominate a division and British people like that. It's the same in other sports too. We like Tim Henman because he was always the underdog and fell short of being truly elite. We don't like Andy Murray, who is probably more talented and should win a Grand Slam in his career. In football, we are critical of the England team despite producing players like Gerrard, Lampard, Terry and Rooney who the rest of the world rate highly and respected people in the sport, such as Mourinho, rank very highly. Our cricket team becomes the best in the world and we diminish them and their opposition too. It's just the British way. We support the underdogs so much that we prefer to be the plucky underdog who loses most of the time but every now and then, puts in a courageous effort in defeat and if that underdog can excel and become elite, we support them even more. We support these guys over the truly elite. There are always going to be fighters who are underrated. However, think about the likes of Ricky Burns and Carl Froch, who got to the very top despite what other people say. Go back to before the Burns/Martinez and look at how few people picked him to win that one. To say we overrate fighters occasionally may be true, but the majority of the time, British people are either being light hearted or rooting for the underdog, who foreigners will likely never see fight.
just coming into this thread....your wrong. calzaghe wa sa big underdog. but was competative with the bookies because they thought people would see calzaghes big record and think they would have a punt on it. really esb was in a sort of "thanks for all the memories joe" when he was walking into the ring. after lacy fought robin ried and stopped him hard (whcih calzaghe had a real hard time getting a decision against). it just looked like calzaghe was gonna be squashed. the event was called "judgement day" ffs it was a great performance and the showtime commentators where sort of shocked at how it was going. then lacys roator cuff went. lost his left hook and was unable use his defence because he didnt have any to fall back on in th epast. esb went ****ing crazy after that fight.
