It's not always about skill: Why Loma beats Rigo and Why Smith Jr. beats all 175lbers in my opinion!

Listen to this if you can. Sayf is very knowledgeable about all forms of combat. He makes an excellent point on why Loma defeats Rigo and why skill is not the most important ability in fighting ,it's WILL!! That's what I see in Smith Jr. and his future at 175 and why unless you love fighting you have no future in this sport.

Smiths will has not been tested yet.

I agree about Loma but that is more of a combination of skill will and size. Not too sure about smith, there a few monsters in his weight class

But...he dominated a top light heavy weight Andrez Fonfara who made Adonis Stevens look beatable and beat the Aztec out of Chavez Jr.. Smith beat the hell out of him and retired a legend with no foul play.

He didn't 'dominate' Fonfara, though. Fonfara was doing the better work for most of the brief fight but got sloppy when he thought he had Smith hurt. Likewise he wasn't dominating Hopkins despite the ending. And Fonfara didn't even come close to beating Stevenson, though perhaps as you say he did make him look more beatable. I see Smith as a powerful but ultimately quite limited fighter though I'd be happy to be proved wrong. What is interesting about it is that it makes one wonder just how close many prospects or contenders are to being up there with the top names on the right night on a head to head basis. IMO boxing is a sport in which achievements depend at least as much upon opportunity as they do upon ability.

Growing up watching boxing I was always a fan of will.... and was constantly heartbroken that it usually wasn't enough to overcome skill.

If willpower trumped skill... guys like Micky Ward and Fernando Vargas would be ATGs.

That's the same bull as "boxing is 90% mental and 10% physical" or the same about 90/10 commitment vs talent... like if you really, really believe in yourself, and train hard you can become a top boxer without having any talent and/or physical abilities.

At the championship level, everybody has will. Will doesn't matter that much when you can't land punches.

From the very beginning he outlined his conversation by saying that skill and technique are not the primary attributes of a fighter. I agree with that. It is usually the will or resolve of one fighter over the other that decides a match when the fight is close. I know you gents are familiar with the phrases "he had to dig deep" or "he wanted it more". Those are terms that deal with the will or resolve of a fighter. Now, I didn't listen to the whole spill so I could be off base but what the hell, I wanted to say this anyway.

I'm very aware of that. That fight didn't test will though. Just because an underdog doesn't come into a fight to laydown for a paycheck doesn't mean they are showing willpower. They're doing their job. Smith Knocked Fonfara out before the fight even started to get tough.

All this crazy hype on Smith Jr going to start making me root against the man. I can think of several that I would be very, very confident facing Smith Jr.

Key words 'when the fight is close'

If two fighters are so near in talent or skill that its a close fight, obviously the guy who wants it a lot more can often take it.

I dont see how that is any different than saying

When two people are close in heart, the one with the more skill will take it

    Or

When two people are close in talent, the one with the more skill and or heart can take it

    They negate eachother...

    Heart, Talent, IQ (skill)

Are all building blocks... i dont see how heart outweighs the others in any significant amount

Here's the difference for me, Talent can be developed, skills can be sharpened, ( heart or will or whatever you wanna call it) is already there. Either you have it or you don't. The key word is( Primary ).

Saw a drunk dude on the street the other day. He had his hands around a skinny dirty looking hooker's throat, choking the hell out of her and screaming, "Ding, You done gave me the Crabs"!!!!!
The hooker, wide eyed and gasping yelled in reply, "Joe, What the hell you expect for $2, Lobster"?
