    Actually, it kind of did happen until about 1965. And it's been a slow but steady deterioration since then.

    It does the complete opposite of making good matches as we end up with too many unworthy “Champions “

    While generally titles are held by top 10 and usually top 5 ranked fighters in a division, who has belts or not on it's own truly tells you nothing. About anything.

    I didn't say there should be more belts. I said 1 boxer should be allowed to carry 1 belt at a time. Then there will be more challengers, athletes will be more interested in boxing because there will be more opportunities to become a champion.

    It's an inverse equation though? The more opportunities to be a champion, the less that being a champion means.

    What should 'champion of the world' mean?

    What does it mean in boxing?

    I think this gets to the heart of things - there shouldn't be more opportunities to become a champion; it devalues the achievement and it starts to become a commodity. A world champion should always be reserved for the elites that manage to battle to the pinnacle of the sport.

    Lowering the bar to where that pinnacle is simply is a path to mediocrity.

    Having 4 diff belts from 4 diff bodies in one division issokay. What isnt is having supers and regulars in same division from the same sanctioning body.

    Iss really not all that confusing if they stick to just four. Lets say the 4 are scattered. they will have their own contenders list.
    WBA = Fighter A
    WBC = Fighter B
    IBF = FIghter C
    WBO = FIghter D

    Stick to one or 2 mandatories so the champs get a defense in or 2 then they can go for unification bouts. If they win their defenses and beat their mandatories then it can go like.
    WBA + WBC = A
    IBF + WBO = C

    These 2 guys can then have another mandatory or 2 defenses before they go fight for to be the Undisputed champ for that division. Point is just scrap all the other belts like the supers and regulars.

    I didn't say theres more belts either, just more up for grabs. In other words youre artificially creating more belt holders. It doesn't increase competition, it doesn't generate more quality fights. All it does is water down the term champion and confuse what it means to be one. That's literally it.
