Contrary to my expectations, Calderon is not retiring after getting beat up by Mexico's newest unified Champion Segura. Calderon says he's fine, healthy and ready to keep on fighting even after being brutally stopped. He says he felt like he was fighting on par with Segura until the very well placed body shot that made him put his knee down. He also said he didn't get up after the 10 count because he was going to keep getting punished and that's not why people box. Calderon's team feels that because Calderon started late his professional career and hasn't taken much punishment (aside from his last few outings) he still has more to give at the age of 35, and that like others have before him, he can still do good things after losing his first fight. Segura said he was surprised with Calderon's punch resistance. He said Calderon even made him see stars even though he(Calderon) was already slowing down and that he really is the better boxer, but his(Segura's) punching power is just too much for that weight division. He states he's happy with the win but that the real challenge will be to fill the great Champion's shoes.
That's probably the only fight I would like to see Calderon in. I also forgot to mention Calderon plans on moving up to 112 to try and win a world title there and then hopefully go back down to 108. Neither him or Segura ruled out a possible rematch.
Agreed. He tips his hat to Calderon & I think if Calderon wins his next fight, there will be a rematch.
I like how he says the real challenge will be filling Calderon's shoes, classy move, not many fighters acknowledge their opponent like that, it's normally just ''he's a good fighter''. I wouldnt mind seeing another fight between these two, I know Calderon is past his best but he's still going to be a real challenge for anybody in the division.
A rematch will be far the biggest fight either of these guys will make. I doubt Calderon would win, but I will root for him and I would love to see it happen. Calderon-Vilora is another good one. I can see Calderon winning that one alot more easier then a rematch.
He really does, he definitely has a new fan in me. I wish him nothing but the best and a long and great career.
I'm with you that is a very respectful thing to say to your beaten opponent. This Mexican vs Puerto Rican rivalry is probably the most heated in boxing, but lately their fighters have been very respectful of each other before and after the fight. I liked how Segura went and hugged Calderon after the fight, even before celebrating. :good gotta love the fighters from these two boxing countries.
I'm actually not sure... I'm going to say what I've always thought and then I'll try to find out more accurately. I think he turned pro around the age of 26...
Yeah he turned pro at the age of either 25 or 26. He didn't come to the sport late per se, he just turned pro late.
I just checked in boxrec and his first pro fight was in 2001. I tried to find a biography but I didn't find any good info. I never said he started boxing late. I said he started his professional career late in the context that maybe he could have accomplished more if he would have started his pro career earlier. Maybe win a title earlier, get more defences, etc.
