I think Cotto can make 147 easily. He just like to eat too much. Before his first fight at 154 I said it. And after a couple of weeks working with him Freddie Roach saw the same thing. Cotto was very close to 154 lbs without even dieting. He will never be a real 154 pounder.

he can make 147 but he'll rather keep drinking his beers. even at 154 you can see that he still has pounds to lose

I know its not the topic and it shouldn't derail the thread, but you make some good points there. Canelo actually doesn't match up that badly against Cotto :think

    Good post.

    That's disappointing imo.

To me it always seemed like the move to 154 was almost out of laziness.... not wanting to put in the work to make 147. Cotto is clearly too small for the division, and its simply a money grab or true delusion if he thinks he will compete at 160 (for the record, I actually think his upcoming fight is a dangerous one so Im not even looking past that)

True, his best bet right now is probably to take on an ever regressing and frail Martinez coming off a huge layoff, for the middleweight title. The risk vs reward there has finally made sense (funny though how there was 0 chance of this fight when Martinez was truly a force, but that's boxing) If he wins, he is the linear middleweight champion and gets the best win of his career, if he loses, it wont be held against him too much. But that should be the start and finish of any ideas about middleweight.

Still though, if no Martinez (which I still consider unlikely) would rather see Cotto return to where he should be... 147. Fights against Marquez, Bradley, Rios, Ruslan, Alvarado.... seriously theres plenty of good fights with decent money against the new era.

    Broner, Garcia, Maidana,

The list is almost endless for Cotto at 147, given that he can work with Top Rank and GBP. And most of these guys are 140lbers competing at welter, not the huge welters that usually can give Cotto problems. These are the guys Cotto should be looking to fight. I just don't understand Cotto's selection in opponents.

But unless he plans on some serious cherry picking, which he doesn't do for the most part, staying at 154 or moving up to 160 just doesn't make much sense to me. Then again, fighting Trout when he did, and fighting Delvin now, didn't/doesn't make much sense to me either.

Anyways..... all I know is that at least theres a lot of intriguing fights for Cotto at the end stage of his career, its just that for his sake it would be nice if they were at 147 instead of 160.
