It's strange to see how many fellers here dislike Kelly Pavlik...

I don't dislike him, I in fact have an abundance of respect for him but this still does not make me blinkered enough to put him in the top ten pound for pound.

He may get there one day if he surprises me.

 

I underestimated Pavlik up until his rematch with Taylor and I'm not jumping on the 'Taylor was overrated' bandwagon which alot of Pavlik's detractors seem to have seized upon.

But despite all that, I'd like to see him step up and face Kessler. Pavlik is one of the only boxers I have done a complete U-turn in judgement about but before I'd call him world class I want to see him against Kessler.

Pavlik is the best middleweight in a good (but not great) division.

Pavlik is the kind of fighter boxing needs.


Goes into every round with the aim of trying to knock his opponent out, not just win the round.

 

The love/hate thing for boxers is a complicated story. Kelly Pavlik and Hatton are very popular, and hated for the same reason. Its because most boxing fans can see themselves in them (at least a little). More so than guys like Ali, PBF, RJJ, SRL, etc. Many fustrated fighters like myself watch guys like Pavlik, Hatton, Duddy, Cotto, Gatti, etc. and think you know I could have been that guy, if I just dedicated myself, had a better trainer, gave up beer and *****, blah, blah, blah. The real story is that those guys are 100x more talented than 99% of the rest of us, but because they seem like regular people we seem to indentfy with them. So we pull for them, but get jealous when they do too good?
I hope Pavlik holds on to his title for a few more years, beats all the guys out there, retires undefeated, rich and with all his brain cells. Because that is what I would have hoped for myself.

 

I love watching Pavlik but i can understand how some can hate him due to some of his overzealous fans. That's what made me hate Calzaghe.

I think this explains it. I agree though that it's silly to hate Pavlik because of his fans.

 

Care to name a few?? I can think of about 5 or 6. Yeah compared to you Calzombies, we're really in mass numbers.

And someone has to counterbalance your nuthuggery of Calzaghe and Kessler. :good Otherwise, everyone in here would think that Calzaghe and Kessler would've beaten anyone at 168 or 175. :nut
