For a long time, Gennady Golovkin fought on the undercard of Felix Sturm and the company. Today, the KO king from Kazakhstan has long been a multiple world champion - and just a missed chance for boxing Germany.

In the evening of October 17, 2015, "Madison Square Garden" literally shook. The unification bout in middleweight between world champions Gennady Golovkin (WBA) and David Lemieu (IBF) in the New York boxing temple was in full swing. Again and again Triple-G hit the target hard, and the blows of the Kazakh were as powerful as if they were being hammered. In the 5th round Golovkin conducts a heavy blow to the corps and sends Lemieux to the flooring. As expected by most experts, the WBA champion dominated this fight and finally stopped his high-ranking opponent in the 8th round. The figures are impressive: it was the 33rd victory in the 33rd knock-out fight, the 21st knockout in a row (the total of knockouts was 89%), and the 15th title defense in the successful series. Golovkin again cuts down the opponent, and his fans are in ecstasy.

Theoretically, this victory by knockout over Lemieux could be listed in the statistics of German professional boxing. Because Golovkin from 2006 to 2009 was part of Spotlight Boxing - a branch of the Universum Box-Promotion. But the Hamburger (Klaus-Peter Kohl, Sports.kz) for many years kept a powerful Kazakh in fact under lock and key. What turned out to be a serious mistake, if now to cast a glance in the past. Since, with proper positioning, Golovkin could now be not only the King of Knockouts, but also the King of quotations on German television. Today, Triple-G is a world star - and a missed opportunity for German professional boxing. But how did this fatal error happen?

"With Gennady in the Universum have acted dishonestly", - recollects Jean-Marcel Nartz. The former functionary in boxing was during Golovkin's stay in Germany as the technical director of Universum - from 2003 to 2009. Spotlight was at that time something like Universum U21, explains the 71-year-old specialist. Gennady was a benevolent, polite and discreet person, says Nartz. "He was one of the prettiest guys who boxed at Universum." But in the status of junior U21 Golovkin before coming to Germany, almost never was.

Gennady Golovkin (hence his nickname Triple-G) was born on April 8, 1982 in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. His Russian father and a Korean mother besides Gennady with his twin brother Maxim had two older sons, Vadim and Sergei. Four boys spent a lot of free time on the street and often met in fights - often with adults. "My brothers have been doing this since I went to the kindergarten," Golovkin said. "Every day - with different people." In all this he also often took part, since Sergei and Vadim wanted to prepare Gennady for the career of a boxer.

The two elders, especially Vadim, initiated the beginning of classes for their younger brothers by boxing and encouraged them in every possible way. For the manifestation of the extraordinary talent of the future champion much time was not required. Already at the age of 12 Gennady won numerous youth competitions.

But fate cruelly treated him and his family. It was the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the two older sons served in the army. And at some point the family was informed of the tragic death of Sergei and Vadim. Its circumstances have not been clarified. "It was very hard, and almost broke our family," Gennady said. Then he named his son Vadim - in honor of the oldest deceased brother.

Gennady was very broken, and does not hide from this. And from this moment the main attention the guy gives to his boxing career. Talent turned him into one of the best lovers of his time. World Junior Champion, World Champion among adults, silver medalist of the 2004 Olympic Games: Golovkin took the medal for the medal. At the end of his amateur career (2005) he had an impressive fighting record of 345 wins (with 5 defeats).

For him was a struggle between promoters, in which Klaus-Peter Kohl unexpectedly won. The convincing argument of the head of Universum was the head coach Fritz Zdunek. "Gennady wanted to work with him, because Fritz had an excellent reputation in the countries of the former Soviet Union because of his work with the Klitschko brothers," says Nartz.

However, schedule and schedule of trainings of the head coach Universum were clogged, and therefore Golovkin began his professional career in Germany under the leadership of Magomed Shaburov. "Fritz watched the training and gave his instructions," says Nartz. Kazakh, who lived in Stuttgart for a total of 7 years, quickly learned German, celebrated his debut for Universum on May 6, 2006, in a battle against Gabor Balogh, defeated by Triple-G in just 88 seconds. It was his first performance on German soil out of 18. On average, Golovkin needed four rounds to get his rivals out of the ring.

But, even providing spectacular spectacular knockouts, Golovkin never went beyond the program of his promoter. Universum demonstrated with the Klitschko brothers a few years earlier that an outstanding boxer can be even without a German name, besides the origin can be very well sold here.

Why did Kohl not dare to try to lead Golovkin into the main fighters? "After Regina Halmich and Dariusz Michalczewski finished their careers, Zsolt Erdei and Gennady Golovkin really became people for the future," Narts said. "But the company made a mistake in its stakes on Felix Sturm. He was the champion of Germany, the champion of the World and the face of ZDF, the television partner of Universum ". Sturm later with a scandal left the company of the Hamburger.

"Universum always gave priority to Sturm and Sebastian Zbik," Golovkin confirmed. But he did not want to stop in his development, so he went on the offensive and sought a duel within the organization. "My demands to fight with any of them have always been rejected for absurd reasons," explained Triple-G in January 2010 in an interview with *******.com. "Gennady at any time would have made Sturm," said Nartz.

This is the opinion of the former boxing manager. Why it was impossible to spar two rivals in training? "This was hindered by the trainer of Sturm Michael Timm. He knew how powerful Golovkin was. " But those responsible for making decisions in ZDF people did not believe in Golovkin as a leader. "There, yes, there was no right flair in the box," laments Nartz.

Universum could lose a TV contract with ZDF. As a result, Golovkin announced in January 2010 about the termination of the contract with the promoter - the dispute went to court.

First, the boxer lost, but did not want to give up, for which he was rewarded at the end. "Gennady stopped the contract with Universum, because Universum deliberately sabotaged his career," said manager Golovkin Oleg Hermann. The proceedings were completed only in March 2012 in the Supreme Court of the Land of Hamburg.

Meanwhile, Golovkin is forging iron while it's hot. In California, he meets Abel Sanchez. An experienced trainer with his legendary Summit-Gym in Big Ber immediately got carried away by the Kazakh machine for knockouts. "He called me his name, but I had no idea who he was," the trainer told Ring magazine about his first meeting with Triple-G.

Everything changed quickly. Already in his first fight after leaving Universum Golovkin won the interim WBA title, which in the same year was replaced by the regular belt of the World Champion of this organization. In 18 fights at the Universum Triple-G did not get a single chance at the title, but after the first fight in free swimming he could already call himself World Champion.

This was the beginning of the world career of a clever Kazakh. In 2011, he signed a contract with K2 Promotions, the organization of the Klitschko brothers. "We signed Gennady, because we believe that he can make a furor not only in Germany, but also at the world level," said Klitschko's manager Bernd Bente "Stern". Managing Director K2 Tom Leffler takes a career middleweight in his own hands and positions him in the US.

Big battles are in close proximity. Unexpectedly, "a tender killer" is interested in the giant pay-TV HBO. Golovkin becomes a real tourist attraction in the States. However, nothing changes compared to his fights in Germany. Triple-G enters the ring, provides one after another exciting battles and quickly defeats his opponents with knockouts. Or, as he likes to say: "I give fans of the Big Drama Show." In early 2013, this athlete once again challenged the newspaper "Bild" to his old rival Felix Sturm: "I will box on its territory, in his city. And we will divide the prize pool 50 by 50. Felix can immediately box for his previous title. " Sturm, however, ignored this proposal.

If today the KO of the King of Kazakhstan is boxing in the US, tickets to the stands are sold out. "His popularity is growing incredibly, every day," says Tom Leffler. And he emphasizes that Golovkin was not the first American, for which Madison Square Garden was filled to the eye (in a fight against Lemieux). "But it's not just in New York," continues K2 manager. "Gennady filled the" Forum "in Los Angeles." Most American boxers themselves fight in crowded halls only when they climb the ring in their own region.

While Triple-G is now one of the biggest pay-TV stars in the US, old German stars are increasingly losing their relevance in the boxing world. Felix Sturm was caught in doping and boxed for the last time in February 2016. Arthur Abraham no longer owns the World Champion title and lost two of his last four fights. Even Vladimir Klichko has already retired. And Golovkin?

His next fight on September 16 against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez brought Gennady record earnings of at least $ 10 million and is considered the "Fight of the Year" in the United States. "Such money Golovkin could hardly have been infected

We had the opportunity to create from Golovkin future superstar - especially for the era after Klitschko. Due to its destructive fighting style and a nice interview, Triple-G would surely win the hearts of German fans and viewers. But, after all, Golovkin's theme was just a missed chance for boxing Germany.

P.S. His amateur record is not 345 wins with 5 defeats. As it stands now his real amateur record is 345 wins and 8 losses.

It's pretty clear that Golovkin doesn't want to say what is his real amateur record or he simply doesn't recall his amateur record. His claimed amateur record 345 wins with 5 defeats are not the real thing because facts say something else.

Here is a list of his defeats:
